The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) is an international association promoting aluminum extrusion as the preferred material process for better products.

The Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) is a progressive trade association dedicated to advancing the effective use of aluminum extrusion in North America. AEC is committed to bringing comprehensive information about extrusion’s characteristics, applications, environmental benefits, design and technology to users, product designers, engineers and the academic community. Further, AEC is focused on enhancing the ability of its members to meet the emerging demands of the market through sharing knowledge and best practices. Celebrating One Year of Growth & Circularity!

A year ago, AEC member EGA America Spectro Alloys opened its new 120-million-pound-per-year billet casthouse in Rosemount, Minnesota.

Since then, the facility has been transforming aluminum scrap into billet for U.S. and Canadian aluminum extruders, helping supply the material needed to produce extruded aluminum components for North American manufacturers.

Domestic extruders typically consume more than 4 billion pounds of aluminum scrap annually, reducing the industry’s carbon footprint and reinforcing aluminum extrusion’s role in the circular economy.

In 1966, AEC member Alexandria Industries was founded in Alexandria, Minnesota, with a commitment to providing high-quality, American-made aluminum extrusions.

FIRE PREVENTION IN THE EXTRUSION PLANT

Fire prevention isn't just about knowing the risks—it's about taking steps to reduce them.

For aluminum extrusion facilities, that means:

Keep work areas clean by regularly removing aluminum chips, debris, and buildup.

Control potential ignition sources and follow facility procedures for equipment and maintenance.

Know your fire-response equipment and make sure employees understand emergency procedures.

Don't overlook battery and charging safety—follow manufacturer and facility procedures for lithium-ion batteries.

Small steps can make a big difference in maintaining a safer extrusion operation.

For Fire Prevention Week, we’re taking a closer look at an important consideration in aluminum extrusion operations: aluminum can behave differently depending on its form.

Solid aluminum, chips and scrap, and finely divided aluminum materials do not present the same fire hazards. Understanding these differences is an important part of recognizing and managing potential fire risks in an extrusion facility.
