This week on Christ the Center, we welcome Matthew Adams to discuss his book Act Like a Man: Understanding the Biblical Call to Masculinity.

Rather than approaching masculinity through cultural compromise or reactionary posturing, Adams begins with the work of the Holy Spirit and the sufficiency of Scripture. He helps us consider what it means for men to pursue righteous living, sacrificial love, dependent leadership, courageous zeal, and humble servanthood in conformity to Christ.

Church government can sound abstract until we remember that it concerns Christ’s care for his people.

In our conversation with Matthew Vogan, John Brown of Wamphray’s work helps us see the church not as a merely voluntary association, but as a visible spiritual society under Christ’s authority. That has practical implications for membership, discipline, pastoral care, unity, and the church’s relation to the civil magistrate.

This week on Christ the Center, we welcome Matthew Vogan to discuss The Nature of the Church by John Brown of Wamphray.

Brown was a Scottish Covenanter who wrote out of deep conviction about Christ’s headship over the church, the visible and invisible church, Presbyterian government, discipline, unity, and the distinction between church and state.

This is a thoughtful and timely conversation for pastors, elders, seminarians, and church members who want to think more carefully about the church as Christ’s visible spiritual society.

On the latest episode of Christ the Center, we welcomed Dr. Michael Mock to discuss his D.Min. dissertation on John Calvin’s pastoral counseling. Drawing from Calvin’s letters, Mock shows how the Reformer cared for people amid grief, anxiety, marital conflict, abuse, persecution, and suffering with theological depth and compassion.

The conversation challenges the caricature of Calvin as cold or detached, highlighting his attention to the whole person—mind, heart, and will—and his confidence in God’s providence, prayer, Scripture, and the ministry of the local church. Calvin’s letters reveal a model of soul care that remains deeply relevant for pastors, elders, and church members today.
