What does mental wellbeing mean to you?

For some of you, it's being able to talk openly with your crew without judgment. For others, it's a full night's sleep after a hard shift, or finally taking that vacation day you keep pushing back. It looks different for every firefighter, police officer, 911 dispatcher, and healthcare worker who shows up for their community, over and over.

We want to hear from you. Drop a word, a sentence, or a story in the comments. Whatever mental wellbeing means to you in your role. Tag someone who'd want to weigh in too.

You are not alone in this.

Every shift asks something of you that most people will never understand. Whether you're on a rig, behind a badge, in dispatch, or at a bedside. The calls that stay with you. The moments you carry home. It's a lot... and it's okay to say so.

Better days are ahead! That's not just a hopeful phrase, it's a promise: things can and do get better, especially when you don't try to carry it all alone.

Whether it's a peer, a counselor, or someone on the other end of a phone line, support is out there and it works.

If you're struggling right now, please reach out. You've spent your career showing up for everyone else: let someone show up for you.

You are not alone. ResponderStrong is with you. Ready to help.

Your workplace matters. Drexel University researchers want to hear from firefighters and EMS providers about what it's really like out there.

10-15 minutes. Totally confidential. Your voice shapes better support for responders everywhere.

If you're 18+ and work in fire or EMS, we'd be honored to have you take this survey: https://science2station.info/4vzdSUD

Nobody's watching. Nobody has to know. That's the point. πŸ”’

ResponderStrong has free, anonymous self-assessment tools built specifically for first responders β€” no login, no record, no one knows you used them. Just you and an honest look at where you're at.

You can screen yourself right now for:
β€” Depression and anxiety β€” multiple tools designed to quickly pinpoint mental health concerns specific to Responders
β€” PTSD and trauma response β€” anonymous assessments to help you recognize the signs before they get worse
β€” Alcohol and substance use β€” honest, judgment-free tools for risky drinking and substance patterns common in the fire service and EMS
β€” Mindfulness and stress β€” audio-guided tools including end-of-shift reset, deep sleep support, and resiliency training
β€” Work and home life tension β€” because the job follows you home, and that matters

These aren't diagnostic. They're a starting point. A private moment to check yourself before things reach a crisis β€” which is exactly when it's easiest to actually do something about it.

Free. Anonymous. Right now.

Nobody signs up for these jobs thinking about what it costs them over time.

The weight of what you see. The shifts that never fully leave. The tension between who you are at work and who you're trying to be at home. It accumulates... quietly, slowly... long before it looks like a crisis.

That's exactly when you should reach out. Not when you're at the bottom. Now.
ResponderStrong exists for this. Free, vetted resources built specifically for first responders and their families β€” before things get to a breaking point.

Here's what's waiting for you at responderstrong.org:
β€” Clinical Providers & Treatment Facilities β€” vetted clinicians, facilities, retreats, and aftercare groups who self-identify as working specifically with Responders β€” Self-Help Tools & Assessments β€” anonymous screening tools for depression, anxiety, PTSD, alcohol use, and more
β€” YOU | ResponderStrong β€” a free, private, browser-based wellness platform built for first responders and their families
β€” Educational Resources & Research β€” guides, toolkits, and evidence-based content for you, your family, and your leaders
β€” ACF Resource Directory β€” a curated nationwide directory of responder-specific support organizations

You don't have to be in crisis to use these. You just have to be carrying something.

Nobody talks about what the job does to your relationships. But the research does. πŸ”¬

First responders experience elevated rates of relationship strain, divorce, and family breakdown β€” not because of personal failure, but because of what the job demands. Shift work, trauma exposure, hypervigilance, and emotional suppression don't clock out. They follow you home. And over time, they take a toll on the people who matter most.

Here's what the science says: strong relationships are one of the most powerful protective factors against burnout, depression, and PTSD. The relationship isn't separate from the mental health conversation. It is the mental health conversation.

RESPOND Online from ResponderStrong was built to address exactly this.
Free. Self-paced. Evidence-based. Developed in partnership with the Center for Relationship Education: a peer-reviewed, research-supported methodology that has documented outcomes in communication, conflict reduction, and relationship satisfaction.

10 modules covering:
-Understanding personality styles
-Managing stress before it damages relationships
-Preventing and resolving conflict
-Building resilience
-Meeting your own core human needs
-Building self-worth beyond the badge
-Deepening intimacy
-Creating your personal legacy

For you. For your partner. For your agency. No cost. No signup. Available right now.

Your crew is only as strong as the leaders closest to them. That's the foundation behind LeadStrong β€” a free, half-day leadership and mental health training program from ResponderStrong, built by Responders for Responders.

Mid-level leaders β€” lieutenants, captains, sergeants, EMS supervisors β€” are the heartbeat of Responder wellness culture. LeadStrong equips them to recognize stress early, intervene before crises escalate, and build teams that are not just operationally ready, but mentally resilient.

Here's what your leaders will walk away with:
βœ… Evidence-based leadership and resilience training
βœ… Practical tools to identify distress before it becomes a crisis
βœ… Strategies to reduce burnout, compassion fatigue, and turnover
βœ… Trauma-informed communication skills that strengthen trust
βœ… A program customized to your agency's culture and needs

And the best part? It's free, on-site, and half-day β€” so your people get what they need without pulling them away for days at a time.

Bring LeadStrong to your department. Your team deserves it.
