Amy McDevitt PT, DPT, PhD joined colleagues from Creighton University, Columbia University, Duke University, and the University of Miami at the AMEE 2026 International Health Professions Education Conference to present on competency-based education and the future of health professions training. We were grateful for the opportunity to collaborate, share scholarship, and learn from educators around the world while also experiencing Vienna's historic architecture, culture, and landmarks.

In the final days in Ecuador, CU DPT students and faculty continued to learn about physical therapy education and practice across the country. The group visited the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, where they connected with faculty and leaders in the physical therapy community to learn more about their program and how physical therapy education differs from that in the United States.

The following day, students and faculty visited Universidad Central del Ecuador to collaborate on a seminar for more than 300 physical therapy students and professionals, discussing the future of physical therapy in Ecuador. Topics included the ICF model, F**T principles, progressive overload, pain science, motivational interviewing, and much more. Thank you to UCE for hosting us!

To wrap up their adventure, the group traveled to La Mitad del Mundo, “the Middle of the World,” and the Basílica del Voto Nacional for their final opportunities to experience the unique culture and geography of Ecuador.

As this incredible journey ends, we have endless gratitude for everyone who made it possible: Dr. Dawn Magnusson, Dr. Jennifer Stevens-Lapsley, Dr. Michael Harris-Love, the entire CU DPT Department, Hombro a Hombro, Sociedad Ecuatoriana de Fisioterapia, and all of the physical therapists, patients, and community members we had the privilege of meeting along the way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your culture, and your generosity with us; we are forever changed. 🇪🇨

Students and faculty returned from an impactful experience in Costa Rica promoting movement as medicine. They connected with many rural communities, presented workshops, and spent a morning with the University of Costa Rica’s physical therapy program! They explored the country through many excursions including river tubing, zip lining, hikes, and more! We are grateful for our partnership with the VN center in Costa Rica to continue to facilitate these meaningful experiences.

Over the last two days, CU DPT in Ecuador traveled to Latacunga to collaborate on a “Movement is Medicine” seminar with local caregivers. Through practical workshops, professionals at Cotopaxi Solidario learned the framework for observing and evaluating their community’s movement and prescribing salient exercises for their overall health and wellness. Caregivers and our team partnered on body mechanics techniques for safe transfers while emphasizing that movement can help prevent comorbidities down the line.

While in the surrounding areas of the Cotopaxi volcano, students and faculty played Ecuavóley, were greeted by perros (dogs), and learned the country’s national card game, Cuarenta! They've all been learning so much Spanish on this trip. Apparently, PT school comes with a minor in Spanglish.

Another international adventure embarks with CU DPT students led by Dr. Dawn Magnusson and Dr. Jennifer Stevens-Lapsey. In the first three days of the trip, they explored Quito’s historic Old Town, visited the National Museum to learn about ancient Ecuadorian artifacts, took a gondola ride to nearly 13,000 feet for breathtaking views of Quito, and sampled Ecuador’s famous cacao and chocolate. After traveling to Santo Domingo, they worked closely with the local PT Flavia regarding two complex patients at a local medical center run by the organization Hombro a Hombro and led two workshops focused on movement as medicine. They ended their day visiting the Tsáchila Cultural Center to learn about the community’s traditions, culture, and rituals.
