Stop-RA Colorado Strategy to Prevent the Onset of Clinically-Apparent Rheumatoid Arthritis (StopRA) is an RA prevention research study at the University of Colorado

StopRA is a clinical trial aimed at learning more about prevention of rheumatoid arthritis. In StopRA, individuals who have high levels of the blood test anti-CCP but who are without joint findings of RA will receive either the drug hydroxychloroquine or a placebo. Hydroxychloroquine is a pill that is already used successfully and safely to treat people who already have RA, and for this trial it will be given for 1 year then stopped, and people will then be followed for an additional 2 years to see if this medication was able to stop or delay the development of RA. A placebo will be given to half of the people in the study so that the study investigators can be sure that any benefit seen from hydroxychloroquine is not something that would have occurred even without medication.
