KUCD staff Sean Tyree and Doug Berryman were guests on the Shelbi Show! They talked about the Kansas Employment First project and the impacts that this work is having for Kansans with disabilities.

The Shelbi Show podcast is meant to "give everyone a seat at the table" and is focused on "conversations with people with disabilities, family members, professionals, advocates, and others who have a connection to the disability community."

Sarina Russo, KUCD doctoral student and research fellow, was interviewed on Kansas Public Radio for their Research Matters series!

Sarina is part of the ConnectUP project at KUCD, which studies how educators and families can work together to enhance students’ self‑determination and school engagement.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!

KU Center on Disabilities research staff Doug Berryman and Ski Adams were invited to join community partners and Governor Laura Kelly to recognize October 2026 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the state of Kansas.

Doug and Ski support the Kansas Employment First project at KUCD, which advances opportunities for competitive, integrated employment in Kansas. Learn more about the project here: kucd.ku.edu/kansas-employment-first

KUCD Director Dr. Karrie Shogren traveled to Japan to connect with self-determination researchers!

Dr. Shogren presented about evidence-based practices developed by KUCD and built on existing collaborations that are translating and adapting materials for local contexts.

"Advancing self-determination is a global effort, and building partnership to advance this work is essential - our partners in Japan are leaders in advancing this work. It was an honor to have the chance to visit Japan with Mayumi Hagiwara, Asuka Yamaguchi, and Kazuaki Maebara and share information about the Self-Determination Inventory and Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction."

Dr. Shogren shared about KUCD's collaborations and translation efforts at the Japanese Association of Vocational Rehabilitation and Japanese Association of Special Education Conferences as well as at the University of Tsukuba.

KUCD staff members Ben Edwards, Ryan Henley, and Austin Myers presented at the Kansas Inclusion Summit in Mayetta, Kansas!

Ben, Austin, and Ryan presented on neurodiversity in the workplace and shared practices to support employees with and without disabilities.
