Meet Trent Hull, Sales Representative at Fabiano Brothers.

📅 How long have you been with your company?
6 months

✨ What is your favorite thing about your company's workplace culture?
Definitely the support from the people I work with. Despite spending most of the day on my own in the market, I have a wonderful team and an outstanding supervisor who I know can always help me succeed.

⚡ What does it mean to you to work for a family-owned business?
Family-owned businesses are more connected to their employees and have a more genuine relationship with them. That is exactly the case with Fabiano Brothers. The staff here seems truly valued and recognized for their hard work.

🚛 What's one thing you wish more people knew about the beer and wine distribution industry?
I bet people would be amazed if they knew how much work goes on behind the scenes of their favorite beer ending up on a store shelf. We have so many hard-working departments of warehouse personnel, truck drivers, and administration staff that all work together to keep customers from going thirsty.

🍺🍷 What’s your current go-to beverage?
Angry Orchard. It’s a close toss-up between that and Michelob Ultra.

Today's Family-Owned & Operated Business spotlight is on John P. O'Sullivan Distributing, Inc. Founded on January 2, 1976, they are proudly celebrating their 50th anniversary this year! We're turning it over to them to share their story in their own words.

"John O’Sullivan got his start in the beer business as a tour guide at Stroh’s Brewery in Detroit while he worked his way through college. He then began calling on distributors around mid-Michigan as a Brewery Sales Representative. When one of those companies, owned by the Moyer family, came up for sale, John recruited a partner, Mike Sullivan, and together they purchased the business and formed Sullivan & O’Sullivan Distributing. John bought out his partner in 1992, and the company has been solely owned by the O’Sullivan family since.

John P. O'Sullivan Distributing is proud to be a multi-generational, family-owned company with our roots firmly planted in Mid-Michigan. What began as a local beer distributorship servicing two counties has grown into one of Michigan's leading beverage distributors, serving more than 2,200 retailers, restaurants, and bars across 11 counties.

Our culture is built on the same values that guided the company from the beginning: hard work, integrity, exceptional customer service, and strong relationships with our employees, suppliers, and customers. We take particular pride in our low employee turnover and the fact that many of our 150 team members have spent significant portions of their careers with our company.

The company remains family-led today under President and CEO Joanie O'Sullivan-Butler, who represents the second generation of ownership. As we continue to grow—including our investment in a new 210,000-square-foot state-of-the-art distribution facility that we opened in October of 2024 —we remain committed to supporting local communities, creating jobs, and carrying our family legacy forward for future generations.

At our core, we're still a local family business that believes success comes from taking care of people—our employees, our customers, our supplier partners, and the communities we serve."

Meet Hailee Johnson, Assistant Controller at Great Lakes Wine and Spirits.

📅 How long have you been with your company?
4 years

✨ What is your favorite thing about your company's workplace culture?
My favorite aspect of our workplace culture is the commitment to supporting employee growth and development. I enjoy working in an environment where people are encouraged to learn, take on new challenges, and contribute their ideas.

⚡ What does it mean to you to work for a family-owned business?
Having previously worked for my parents' family-owned franchise, I have seen firsthand the difference a family-owned business can make. To me, working for a family-owned company means being part of an organization where people are valued as individuals rather than just numbers. There is often a stronger sense of connection, accountability, and personal investment in both employees and the business. I appreciate the more personable culture and the emphasis on building long-term relationships with employees, customers, and the community.

🚛 What's one thing you wish more people knew about the beer and wine distribution industry?
I wish more people understood how much effort goes on behind the scenes in beer and wine distribution. From navigating complex regulations to managing inventory, logistics, and delivery schedules, it takes a dedicated team and strong attention to detail to ensure products are available to consumers while maintaining full compliance with industry requirements.

🍺🍷 What’s your current go-to beverage?
My favorite beverage right now is Lucky One RTDs. They are a perfect summer drink.

✨ What is your favorite thing about your company's workplace culture?
I really enjoy the social aspect of it. I’ve gained a lot of meaningful friendships while working here.

⚡ What does it mean to you to work for a family-owned business?
I feel proud to represent the family that owns the company I work for. I really enjoy that customer service is valued highly with a family-owned company. The trust given to someone to represent them while wearing their name on your shirt is very meaningful to me, and I take that to market with me every day.

🚛 What's one thing you wish more people knew about the beer and wine distribution industry?
How there is so much more to the job than pushing buttons! We all constantly have many things going on at the same time to provide the customer with what they see in the market.

Strong sense of community and personal connection.

It feels more personal because the owners are directly involved in the business, and they know all the employees by name.

🚛 What's one thing you wish more people knew about the beer and wine distribution industry?
Many people think beer goes directly from the brewery to the store, but distributors manage logistics, inventory, and relationships with the retailers to keep the supply chain running smoothly.

Michelob Ultra

Today's Family-Owned & Operated Business spotlight is on Fabiano Brothers!

"Fabiano Brothers is a fourth-generation, family-owned business with a long history of serving Michigan communities. We have seen many changes over the course of 140+ years, and it’s an honor to be able to grow and evolve with the beverage industry. Just 150 years ago, beer was transported cross-country in ice-block railcars, and now we are using state-of-the-art equipment to get beer delivered quickly and efficiently to thousands of retailers daily. While many things have changed, one thing has always stayed the same: our dedication to retailers, employees, and the communities we serve. We are so lucky to work alongside family and continue the legacy for generations to come."
