Society of Women Engineers - Rocky Mountain Section The Society of Women Engineers Rocky Mountain Section Section members have served or are serving as national officers, directors and committee chairs.

The Denver Section of the Society of Women Engineers was chartered in 1954 and renamed the Rocky Mountain Section (RMS) in 1986. The section has been active since its founding, hosting two SWE national conferences, several regional meetings, and establishing the Certificates of Merit Program in Colorado and Wyoming. The section has been recognized nationally by the Society with awards in the areas

of Career Guidance, Newsletter and Professional Development. In 1994, the Pikes Peak Section was chartered to serve the growing number of engineering professionals in the Colorado Springs and other communities in Southern Colorado. The Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain Sections work cooperatively to provide a variety of both continuing development and career guidance activities to members throughout the states of Colorado and Wyoming.

SWE RMS wrapped up the year with a wonderful end-of-year picnic! It was a great opportunity to come together, connect with colleagues, celebrate our accomplishments, and enjoy some time outdoors. Building Your Dream Team: Creating and Sustaining a Collaborative Network as a Woman Engineer

Being part of a supportive and collaborative network in the workplace is essential not only to foster a healthy work environment but also to enhance your engagement, productivity, problem-solving, and innovative impact. In this interactive session with Leela, you will explore how to create and sustain a network of collaborators—including both colleagues you work with directly and others across your organization or field.

You will leave with practical strategies to:

1. Build your “all-star” group of collaborators and comrades
2. Develop and maintain a positive, effective dynamic within your group
3. Recognize and navigate toxic or unproductive behaviors in and outside of your group, while protecting your group’s culture

Leela O’Brien is a space scientist/engineer, Creativity Coach, and speaker. She has a PhD in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Leela’s STEM career has spanned various disciplines, from running high-energy-density plasma physics experiments to investigating heliospheric physics to developing space instruments. As an instrument engineer at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, Leela led the detector subsystem development for the Surface Dust Analyzer on board the NASA Europa Clipper Mission.

Leela’s professional and personal experiences led her to develop the Explorer Mindset Framework, which guides professionals to lean into creative exploration and collaboration to improve engagement, innovative contributions, and fulfillment in their careers. As a coach, she helps professionals uncover their unique brilliance and confidently bring it to the workplace. She also hosts group workshops crafted to help women collectively spark new ideas through creative and intellectual discussions/activities, engage in effective problem-solving, and build supportive relationships.

Join the SWE RMS section on Sunday May 31st from 2-4PM for our End of the Year Picnic at the Robby Ferrufino picnic structure in Arvada. All SWE members, families, and prospective members are welcome to attend! Come out and meet the current section leaders, learn about upcoming section events, and reconnect with old friends in a casual setting. Assorted light snacks and beverages will be provided by the section. We hope to see you there!

Members of SWE got together for a morning outdoors in honor of Earth Day. Participants chose between a ~2-mile walk or a ~4-mile hike. Afterward, we enjoyed snacks and drinks provided at the Golden Mill by CMTA, Inc. , and participants took home some seeds to plant!
