Did you know? 61 million African children of primary school age - one in every two - reach adolescence unable to read, write, or do basic math. We have a global education crisis on our hands, but together we can end it. Join our community of supporters breaking down barriers and building schools in the places that need it most - ASAP.

The Africa School Assistance Project believes in a world where all people have access to safe, equitable, and quality education. Why? Because education, more than any other sector of development, seeds dramatic improvement in poverty reduction, gender equality, health outcomes, child immunization, HIV/AIDS prevention, environmental protection and wildlife conservation. Simply put, widely available public education will lead to a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future for Africa. There are countless barriers to education, especially for girls, and we know that isolated interventions won't create the change needed. So, we systematically develop public schools in rural regions of Tanzania and make sure to break every barrier we cross. School building - Teacher Support - Health - Educational Resources - Community Engagement

Only when solutions are implemented synergistically and address the holistic needs of youth can the impact be deep and lasting.

The work of expanding educational opportunities in rural Tanzania has earned a special recognition, with our Executive Director, Zach Swett, selected as a 2026 Gratitude Network Fellow.

Chosen from a highly competitive pool of more than 1,400 applicants from nonprofit organizations around the world, Zach joins a cohort of 35 leaders dedicated to strengthening their organizations and increasing their impact.

The Gratitude Network Fellowship is a 13-month program that supports nonprofit leaders and their teams as they grow, learn, and scale their work. One of the aspects we're most excited about is that members of ASAP's leadership team will also have opportunities to participate in the fellowship experience, bringing valuable knowledge and insights back to the organization.

We're grateful for this recognition of ASAP's work and for the opportunity to learn alongside an inspiring group of changemakers and the many accomplished alumni who came before them.

Congratulations, Zach. We're excited for what's ahead and for the impact this opportunity will help create for the students, schools, and communities we serve.

It is a great success when everyone involved works together to ensure quality education reaches young learners.

Over the past few weeks, ASAP, representatives from Misungwi District, the local community, and the team at Mugan Secondary School have held a series of meetings with one shared goal: ensuring that school facilities are well maintained so students can learn in a safe and supportive environment.

We’re pleased to work alongside our partners in Misungwi District and Mwaniko Ward as we continue supporting education in our communities.

Salome Kashilimu, looking sharp in that nursing uniform.

Once a student in our Kupanda Project for Girls, she was given the opportunity to pursue who she wanted to become, because when given a chance, anyone can become anything. Today, she is pursuing her nursing degree at St. John’s University of Tanzania in Dodoma.

So inspiring for her peers, the girls she left behind, and honestly, for all of us too.

Do you remember the first time you learned how to use a computer? How did it feel?

For these girls in rural Tanzania, that moment is about much more than learning a new skill. Through the Kuangaza program, they are gaining knowledge, confidence, and new opportunities for their future.

In 2026, digital skills are essential for everyday life, education, and career growth. This program is helping bridge that gap.
We are proud to see how it is transforming not only the lives of these girls, but also making a positive impact on their families and communities.

In all our construction projects, we ensure buildings harvest as much rainwater as possible. At Miririni Secondary School dormitory, this is especially important, as water access remains a challenge in many areas.

Let us give you some context on why our Kuangaza Project matters so much for students in rural areas, especially girls.
For many of them, some careers are completely unknown. Not out of reach, just never seen or heard of.

That is why we bring in influential women from different fields to share their journeys and show what is possible, and how to get there.

Look at how keen they are, listening closely, fully engaged.
This kind of guest speaker session was once only available through the Kupanda Project, but now more secondary schools are getting the chance to experience it.

We are excited to see how this will impact even more girls.

This is how our Kuangaza Project is transforming girls’ education in rural Tanzania through practical, community-driven solutions that create real opportunity and lasting change.

We believe education improves when communities, schools, and partners work together toward the same goal. Every step forward is built through collaboration, consistency, and shared commitment.

Be part of this journey. Visit the link in our bio to explore the many ways you can support this work and help expand access to quality education for girls across rural Tanzania.

At ASAP, we work in close partnership with the local community, and regular engagement is key to building projects that are both successful and sustainable.

This week in Arusha, Jack has been leading a series of productive meetings with key stakeholders, including Ward, Village, and School representatives. These moments of connection matter. They strengthen alignment, build trust, and ensure that every step forward is shared.

It’s always meaningful to sit with the people we’re building alongside. We’re proud to see this collective vision continuing to take shape.
