SSSP is an interdisciplinary community pursuing the application of critical, scientific, and humanis

SSSP is an interdisciplinary community of scholars, practitioners, advocates, and students interested in the application of critical, scientific, and humanistic perspectives to the study of vital social problems, both national and international. The SSSP promotes dialogue through presentations at the annual meeting, and through listservs and newsletters throughout the year; publishes research in the journal Social Problems; presents awards to community groups; supports graduate students, young scholars and activists with professional support, leadership opportunities, and scholarships; passes and acts upon public resolutions; and fosters the generation of new ideas. While we are fully committed to providing an open platform for the free exchange of ideas and spirited debate, we are equally committed to ensuring that these conversations are conducted in a manner that respects the human dignity of participants. Consequently, participants on this SSSP page are expected to comply with the SSSP’s policy against discrimination and harassment (https://www.sssp1.org/file/SSSP_Anti-Harassment_Policy.pdf), which may include, but not be limited to, “offensive jokes, slurs, epithets, name calling … intimidation, ridicule or mockery, and insults and put-downs.” Thank you for your participation and cooperation.

Sociologist Joel Best famously examined fears about poisoned Halloween candy and razor blades in apples, showing how Halloween legends can reveal broader anxieties about danger, childhood, crime, and social change. So, in the spirit of Halloween, we want to hear from the SSSP community!

What urban legend, moral panic, social fear, or supposedly “spooky” phenomenon would you love to analyze or have you analyzed sociologically? Is there a classic sociology reading that gives you Halloween vibes? What is your favorite Halloween candy? Drop your answer in the comments and respond to another SSSP member while you’re there!

Author Meets Critics Sessions are designed to bring authors of recent books considered to be important contributions to the study of social problems and the advancement of social justice together with discussants chosen to provide different viewpoints. We are pleased to announce the Call for Submissions for the 2027 Annual Meeting – Poetry Slam/Talent Show and Art Exhibit. The Program Committee invites you to share your creative work, from poetry, music, drag, and comedy to paintings, photography, and sculpture, at the 77th Annual Meeting in Chicago.
