(232 5th Ave S, Kirkland, WA 98033) You are the light of the world. It is the ultimate end of His death on cross and resurrection.

He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven
that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? A city set on a hill cannot be hidden...
Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (Matt 5:13a, 14, 16)

The Kingdom of God is what our Lord, Jesus Christ aimed for throughout all His salvific works. The revelation of God, the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, testifies this in that the Triune God’s every earthly ministry - creation, redemption, and guidance to perseverance - always has been and is about establishing the Kingdom of God here on the earth. And this fact, to all sinners who already received a punishment of eternal judgment as the result of their sins, is nothing but a gospel (euangelion, good news). The Gospel could never simply be good news for the benefit of human beings nor an enjoyment, if not entertainment, for human souls; it requires total reformation of their paradigm structures and thus results in total replacement of their eternal destiny. The Gospel means that throughout Jesus’ atoning work on cross and His resurrection, sinners in this world could now fathom the dominion of the Triune God as their sole King and that the King’s rule and righteousness could now penetrate into their earthly lives.

The Bible teaches us analogically that such Kingdom of God established amongst our earthly lives is like leaven. At first the Kingdom of God seems small and weak as leaven or a mustard seed; however through God’s providence in trials and disciplines, it dramatically grows into a big tree that birds nest and powerfully transforms the very nature of three measures of flour enough to feed over 100 people.

The Bible also teaches us that the Kingdom of God is, just as a flour mixture with hidden leaven, an invisible Kingdom to human eyes and to secular views. This is the reason why we very often cannot recognize its very existence and its reign in the world where the darkness and the prince of power of the air seem to rule. However, for this very reason, it requires true and sincere faith for us to acknowledge and be a part of God’s Kingdom on earth.

The very world that we live in clearly reveals its dark nature more and more every day. The course of the world is certainly unbiblical and thus anti-biblical, seducing the young generations, brainwashing them to believe and put their trust in human-centered philosophies, logical deductions and self-satisfying ethics as the best guiding principles of their lives. This postmodern generation even furthers the destructive movement along the course making egocentric pleasure and self-serving desire as the ultimate means and ends of their lives.

In the midst of this trends, the Kingdom of God in the world requires a church that transforms the world through overflowing God’s power into it even if she is weak and small in numbers, just as leaven. Even when it seems to our eyes that the darkness of the world is winning and the world’s means of dominion (such as the principle of wealth, power, and popularity) looks quite convincing, there needs to be a church that, with unfailing and uncompromising faith, expands the Kingdom rule conquering the world.

Along with this in mind, we should never forget that Jesus, all throughout the Gospels, warned the hypocritical religious lives of the scribes and Pharisees, analogously addressing them as “negative” leaven, as well. Like leaven, unproclaimed truth and unincarnated love toward God and our neighbors do powerfully corrupt the nature of faith and void the power of the good news. We, who are living in the last days, must be alert to human-centered false belief system and mere hypocritical religious activities. We are to seek true sanctification that leads us into maturity, growing us up to the Christ Jesus, our true Savior.

How long, O God?

10/15 Bible Reading #142 Daily Devotional #1901: Acts 27–28 + Psalm 79

Throughout our lives, we face countless choices and make countless decisions. When standing before those decisions, we sometimes wish we could see into the future. This is especially true when we encounter storms in life, particularly in those critical moments when it seems that our choices could determine whether we live or die.

After appealing to the Roman emperor, Paul sets sail from Caesarea toward Rome in Italy (27:1). This is the final journey of Paul recorded in Acts. But because of contrary winds, the ship is unable to make its way past the island of Crete (27:8).

Then a wrong decision is made. Their schedule had been delayed, and the dangerous season for sailing in the fall had arrived. Paul wanted to remain on Crete and spend the winter there (27:9). But “when the south wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose” (27:13), they set sail. As a result, they encountered a northeaster called Euraquilo and faced the danger of shipwreck (27:14–44).

There are times when we go through a crisis that makes it seem as though one wrong decision has brought our lives to an end. But at such times, what we need to hold on to is not some divine ability to “see into the future.” It is the “mission God has given us” (27:23–24).

Paul had been given the mission of standing before the Roman emperor, defending himself, and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. As long as that mission remained, God would surely provide a “way of escape” amid the threats and challenges he faced (27:25–26; 1 Corinthians 10:13).

There is one more thing we need to hold on to when going through a crisis: caring for one another, serving and loving one another, and building relationships of trust. Paul cared for and encouraged the 276 people aboard the ship as though they were his own friends (27:9–10, 22, 31, 33–36). As a result, the Roman centurion Julius developed a favorable attitude toward Paul (27:3) and protected his life (27:43). They looked after one another and helped keep one another safe.

The same thing happened on the island of Malta. Paul prayed for the healing of the father of Publius, the chief official of the island, as well as other sick people on the island (28:8–9). Paul did not have to serve them in this way, but because he did, they cared for him and his companions, who had lost all their possessions at sea, and provided everything they needed during the three months they spent there over the winter (28:10–11).

Because of Paul’s service to others, when he finally arrived in Rome, he was permitted to live in a rented house rather than in the notorious, brutal underground prison of Rome (28:30). He was allowed to stay there under the guard of a single Roman soldier (28:16). Using this house as his base, he was able to teach the kingdom of God and the Lord Jesus Christ to the Roman soldiers and everyone who came to visit him (28:31).

Sometimes, when we encounter the storms of life, unexpected confusion, and crises, we may become afraid, anxious, and discouraged because we cannot know what the future holds. We may find ourselves crying out, “How long, O LORD?” (Psalm 79:5).

But at such times, the first thing we need to focus on is the mission God has given us. When we focus on our mission, we gain the strength of hope to overcome our crises. Second, we need to care for and love one another. Paradoxically, it is precisely in those moments of crisis that we may meet some of the most important and beloved friends of our lives and receive the precious gift of their help and support.

But at such times, the first thing we need to focus on is the mission God has given us. When we focus on our mission, we gain the strength of hope to overcome our crises. Amazingly, it is often in moments of crisis that our mission becomes even clearer.

Second, we need to care for and love one another. Paradoxically, it is precisely in those moments of crisis that we may meet beloved friends who are the most precious gifts of our lives and receive their help and support.

10/14 Bible Reading #141 Daily Devotional #1900: Acts 25–26 + Psalm 78

Two years have passed since Paul began his imprisonment in Caesarea. During that time, the Roman governor changed from Felix to Festus (24:27). After taking office, Festus went to Jerusalem and met with the Jews (25:1).

The Jewish leaders then asked him to send Paul to Jerusalem. They were planning to ambush and assassinate him along the way (25:2–3). They still held the same intentions they had two years earlier (23:12–14).

It is truly shameful that people who were respected as leaders of the people, and who even claimed to be God’s people, had held on to hatred and anger for more than two years. Rather than letting go of their hatred, they had strengthened and intensified their evil intentions, continually pressing for Paul to be killed (25:2).

One of the characteristics of those who follow Jesus is that they practice self-denial every day. This self-denial is expressed in their relationships with others through acceptance and forgiveness.

Today, I examine my own heart to see whether there is still unresolved disappointment or hurt toward others within me. I must strive to accept and forgive others so that I do not end up living the way those people did.

In contrast, we see Paul becoming increasingly firm and precise in his understanding of Jesus, who had appeared to him and personally met him. Unlike those who continued to nurture and intensify their desire to kill Paul, he continued to deepen his understanding of the One who had transformed his life.

Now, before Governor Festus and King Agrippa, the Jewish ruler, Paul recounts for the third time (chapters 9, 22, and 26) how Jesus met him on the road to Damascus. Compared with the earlier accounts, this one is much more systematically developed, more carefully equipped with theological reasoning, and especially shaped into his own testimony of salvation for the purpose of evangelism (26:4–23).

He begins by defending himself, explaining that he had formerly lived as a Pharisee, belonging to the strictest sect of Judaism, and that he lived in the hope of the promise God had made to their ancestors (26:4–8). He then connects that hope to the resurrection of Jesus from the dead (26:12–18).

In his testimony, the voice of Jesus, which he had not described in such detail before, is now presented more specifically (26:14). A theological framework has also taken shape in which conversion means turning from darkness and the power of 'Satan' to God (26:17–18). His words were so persuasive that, even within that brief exchange, King Agrippa was moved by what he heard (26:28, 32).

Today, the thoughts I must continually carry in my heart are thoughts about Jesus Christ. I cannot live with a heart that holds on to hatred and anger. I must meditate every day on how Jesus came to meet me and what kind of love he continues to pour into my life. I must keep refining my testimony of salvation and my confession of faith, making them increasingly clear, well-organized, firm, and precise.

I pray that this powerful message will come from my lips and pierce someone’s heart (Psalm 78:4). I must continue nurturing and developing this weapon within me—a weapon powerful enough to bring hope to a hopeless heart and break every chain of Satan that binds a person.

10/13 Bible Reading #140 Daily Devotional #1899: Acts 23–24 + Psalm 77

This passage records how Paul was seized by the Jews in Jerusalem, transferred to Caesarea, the administrative capital, and imprisoned there for two years. At first glance, it seems that Paul was simply being treated unjustly and forced to remain in prison.

But when we look more closely, we discover God’s amazing providence. The Jewish leaders, including the high priest Ananias and the Sanhedrin, decided to kill Paul and made plans to ambush and assassinate him (23:12–15).

Yet thanks to a Roman tribune named Claudius Lysias, Paul continued to be protected from the Jews and was transferred to Caesarea, escaping their assassination plot (23:26–32).

Later, the Roman governor Felix also protected Paul from the Jews by keeping him in prison (24:22–23). What is important is that Felix ordered that Paul be given “some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs” (24:23). He likely gave this instruction because Paul’s family members were visiting him.

So although Paul appeared to be living a life in prison, this may actually have been a time he could spend with his family, especially the family of his sister, who is mentioned in the Bible (23:16). It may have been a blessed time for him to rest and recover physically and emotionally after becoming exhausted and worn down by his long journeys.

How intricate and amazing God’s work of providence is! God is not only the One who moves Paul’s heart and urges him forward to fulfill his mission; at times, he is also the One who tenderly and warmly cares for him and restores him.

What is important is that, in order to experience such thoughtful care from God, Paul was required to have a “good conscience” (23:1), that is, a “clear conscience” (24:16).

If Paul had given anyone grounds for accusation or conflict, even over the smallest matter, whether in public or private life, he would never have received any favor from the Roman tribune Lysias or Governor Felix. It was not his Roman citizenship (22:25–28) that made the difference, but rather his conscientious way of life, which allowed him to receive favor beyond mere legal protection.

Today, I hope to experience God’s warm and thoughtful care in my own life, just as Paul did. To that end, I will strive to live in such a way that my conscience does not condemn me before the Lord, nor do my words or actions trouble the consciences of others. Only those who live this way have the privilege of experiencing the gracious hand of God.

10/12 Bible Reading #139 Daily Devotional #1898: Acts 21–22 + Psalms 75–76

There were people who tried to dissuade Paul from going to Jerusalem. When the ship left Asia Minor and arrived at Tyre in Syria, the disciples there urged him earnestly, “through the Spirit,” not to go to Jerusalem (21:3–4).

After leaving Tyre, Paul arrived in Caesarea, the administrative capital of Syria, and stayed at the house of Philip (21:8, 10). At that time, the prophet Agabus came and delivered a message that “the Holy Spirit says” (21:11). The message was that Paul would be bound in Jerusalem. When they heard this, the people there, and even Luke, wept and pleaded with Paul not to go (21:12).

Why did Paul not obey the words that the Holy Spirit had spoken through these people? It was clearly the Holy Spirit who had spoken to them and prompted them to stop Paul. If so, was Paul not going against the Holy Spirit?

No. Paul was obeying the Holy Spirit alone. He was not being swayed by what other people said. This was because he had personally heard the voice of God the Holy Spirit and had received a mission from Jesus through the Holy Spirit (20:22–24).

We do not know why the same Holy Spirit spoke differently to Paul and the people around him, especially Luke, who was traveling with Paul. Yet sometimes this happens. The Holy Spirit may prompt one person to go while prompting another person to stop that person from going.

Therefore, I realize that what matters most is obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking directly to me, rather than simply following the voice of the Holy Spirit that someone else has heard. Of course, we also need the wisdom to listen carefully to the prompting of the Holy Spirit that others have received. But if the message the Holy Spirit has given someone else differs from what I have received, I recognize that this may actually be a test meant to strengthen my confidence in the prompting of the Holy Spirit I have received.

In other words, the Holy Spirit is not giving contradictory messages. Rather, he speaks to each person in a way that is true for that person's particular circumstances and situation (21:14). Therefore, the most important thing is for me to hear “directly,” through the prompting of the Holy Spirit, the voice of the Lord speaking to me personally.

Because Paul had this kind of experience, even when he faced the possibility of being arrested and killed, he was able to testify so boldly before others about the Jesus he had encountered (21:27–22:21). He feared God rather than people. Those who hear God's voice only through other people will inevitably become concerned about what those people think of them. But when a person receives the prompting of the Holy Spirit directly, they no longer need to fear people.

Today, we live in a culture where how we appear to others is extremely important. Because we worry so much about how we look in other people's eyes, our lives become more depressed and confused. In particular, comparing ourselves with others eats away at our souls.

Amid the culture and values of this world, I want to desire and follow only what the Lord speaks directly to me. That is what it means to live a life filled with the Holy Spirit. This is why, if I do not pray, my faith can never stand firm.

10/10 Bible Reading #138 Daily Devotional #1897: Acts 19–20 + Psalm 74

Paul’s third missionary journey (18:23–21:15) centered on Ephesus in Asia Minor. He stayed in Ephesus for a total of three years, teaching the Word day and night (20:31), and for two of those years, he taught Scripture in a hall called the Hall of Tyrannus (19:10).

And through Paul, extraordinary things took place. People were healed and evil spirits drove out when they touched even Paul’s handkerchiefs or aprons (19:12). As the Word was proclaimed, books of magic were burned (19:19–20), and a riot broke out when the models of the temple of Artemis could no longer be sold (19:23–41).

Yet in the midst of such fruitful ministry, Paul decided to leave (20:1). He then traveled through the region of Greece and made his way back toward Jerusalem. It was later revealed that he was going to deliver the relief funds collected from the churches in Greece and Asia Minor (Romans 15:25–31; 2 Corinthians 8–9).

It therefore appears that Paul was traveling with representatives of the churches in Greece and Asia Minor (20:4). Since the offerings were being delivered in cash, witnesses were needed, and because the money consisted of coins, people were also needed to transport it.

Paul knew clearly that if he went to Jerusalem, he would face persecution from the Jews and be imprisoned (20:23). Yet he was leaving behind the fruit and glory of his ministry in Ephesus in order to deliver money. This may have been difficult to understand not only for us today, but also for Paul’s fellow workers and the believers of his time.

But when the Holy Spirit places a mission on someone’s heart, a minister, a missionary, or a pastor must go and fulfill that mission (20:24).

As I read this passage, I am reminded once again of the mission God has given me. My calling is not simply to plant a church and make it grow. It is to proclaim and share the gospel in the Seattle area, a place in the United States often described as lost ground. In particular, my calling is not merely to lead a church that gathers once a week, but to create opportunities for people to encounter the gospel through ministry throughout the week.

In these difficult times, I have been called to lead people to the Lord, one soul at a time, by building relationships in which we love one another like family. When things become confusing and complicated, I pray that I—and all of us—will hold firmly to our mission. I do not want us to forget that our mission is the very reason and purpose for our lives. To fulfill that mission, I want us to obey even when doing so may seem unreasonable or illogical.
