The Natural History Survey connects those with knowledge of Rhode Island's animals, plants, and natural communities with each other and with those who can use that knowledge for research, education, and conservation.

Please give a big Survey welcome our newest employee, Kara Heilemann (at right, with David Gregg and Brendan Buckless checking out South Kingstown Land Trust's shiny, new Yawgoo Trail). Kara will assist Brendan Buckless at Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to implement the Forest Legacy Program. Forest Legacy is a U.S. Forest Service program that partners with states to encourage the protection of particularly notable private forests against development through easements or outright purchases.

Kara comes to us from Connecticut DEEP where she was a forestry technician. She also has worked on forest conservation for the Land & Water Conservation Fund and USFS's Northern CT Research Station. She has a Masters degree from UConn in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with diverse research experience primarily in pests and pathogens. Welcome, Kara!

Seeds of change on your mind today? Great things can spring from the smallest packages, whether Andropogon viginicus (left), Schizachyrium scoparius (center), or A. glomeratus (right). This is the LAST CALL! We hope YOU will join us for our Annual Award Luncheon!

The company, the food, and the desserts promise to be great!

There will be lots of time to socialize and meet new folks, and we'll hear from several presenters about life's work, always showing up, adventurous surprises, and winding paths that have led to the present!

I can't lie, what I am most looking forward to is hearing words of wisdom & insight from dear friend, and the 2026 RI Distinguished Naturalist Award recipient, Hope Leeson. Botanist, teacher, artist, and so, so much more.

Biodiversity bingo on Sunday at the Wild Colonial Tavern was a blast with good results on iNaturalist. Here's the leader board...136 species in just a couple hours, with melissaguillet, beetlemanne, and RISDnaturelab leading the way. We're going to open up the iNat project to all observations within a mile of the bar, so still keep your eyes peeled and keep logging finds!

We had a beautiful fall day exploring biodiversity in downtown Providence and playing natural history trivia at the Wild Colonial Tavern. As of this evening we have reports of almost 100 species on the iNat project. We had amazing finds at CityFarm with the folks from Southside Community Land Trust including an aggregation of Dekays brown snakes. Congrats to the bingo and trivia winners, that was a lot of fun. All sales of b**r from Maine B**r Company was donated to support the Survey. Thanks to Maurice Collins and the Wild Colonial and the walk leaders including Paul Miller, 15 Minute Field Trips, and RISD Nature Lab!

Here we are folks... it is a GLORIOUS day here at Wild Colonial Tavern in Providence! The bird, bug, and botany teams are out scouring the landscape, filling in their Biodiversity Bing cards!

There is still time to join us... For a competitive few rounds of Natural History Trivia from 3:00 5:00pm. Try your luck for some fabulous prizes from the Survey, and as always, third place will receive Wild Colonial pint glasses.

Along with the Wild Colonial, co-sponsoring this fundraiser is Maine B**r Company and for every Prince Percy Pils purchased today, 100% of the purchase price goes to the Survey.

During a recent vacation to the southwest, Survey director David Gregg took some time while in Albuquerque to meet Survey founding director Lisa Gould for breakfast. Then they took a walk along the Rio Grande Bosque (riverbank cottonwood forest) where Lisa introduced him to some New Mexico natural history including this rubber rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa). Lisa is doing well and sends her love to all the naturalists back home in Rhode Island.
