When you’re at the Italian Fall Festa next weekend, please recycle EMPTY plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles, beer cups, wine cups and pizza boxes. Empty all food and beverages before recycling. Food scraps, napkins, plastic utensils, styrofoam and anything with food or liquid remaining belong in the trash. Some journeys don't end—they come full circle. ❤️🇮🇹

"My grandfather, Antonio Zucco, left Fonzaso, Italy in 1914 to work in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania,” said Linda Mercuri Fischbach, member of the John Pirelli Lodge 1633 in Kettering, Ohio. In 1928, the miners went on strike, forcing Antonio, his wife Adelina, and his five children to visit his relatives in Fonzaso.

"Sadly, the ‘Crash of 1929’ prevented Tony from bringing his family back to the United States until October of 1934,” said Linda. “The love and strength of my Italian grandparents kept their family together despite those long 6 1/2 years apart."

Decades later, Linda returned to her family's hometown with her siblings and her 85-year-old mother, Gloria, who had last seen Fonzaso as a child. Together, they revisited the church where Gloria made her First Communion, the humble family home where three generations once lived, and the mountain village that shaped their family's story. They were welcomed by cousins with regional food, explored the area's rich Roman history at the foot of the Dolomites, and visited the places their ancestors called home.

Before leaving, Linda paused at a street sign that read "Via Zucco." When a passerby asked her for directions, she instinctively replied, "Mi dispiace, ma non sono di qui" ("Sorry, I'm not from here"). Then, she realized: “Yes, I am from here!"

A powerful reminder that no matter how many generations have passed, our roots are never far away.
