Life Connection of Ohio was proud to support the inaugural event of The Dylan Flew Memorial Golf Outing at Eagle Creek Golf Club on Saturday! The outing honored Dylan's life-saving legacy, raised money for Team Ohio 4 Life, and educated the community about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation.

We'll let Dylan's mother, Kathi, take it away:

"Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude and pride as we reflect on the incredible success of the Dylan Flew Memorial Golf Outing. Twenty years after Dylan's passing, we are amazed by the love and loyalty shown by the 'kids' who grew up with him and continue to honor and celebrate his life. Seeing so many people come together in his memory was truly moving. One of the most meaningful moments was having one of Dylan's organ recipients join us – a powerful reminder that Dylan's legacy continues to live on and impact others every day. The event was an overwhelming success, and it would not have been possible without the support of our family, friends, volunteers, sponsors, golfers and community members. Together, we not only celebrated Dylan's life, but we also made a significant impact in supporting Team Ohio Transplant Athletics. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day so special.

The love, memories, laughter and generosity shared throughout the event reminded us all that Dylan's story continues to inspire others, and his legacy remains stronger than ever. We couldn't be more proud, grateful and humbled. "

Life Connection of Ohio hosted a very special unveiling of one-of-a-kind donor hero art pieces at our Dayton Regional Office. Our Community Services Department connected with five donor families, who shared personal items along with memories of their loved one, allowing Brian Riegel to work his artistic magic in creating beautiful custom pieces.

This piece was created in honor of Kyle Jackson, who gave the gift of life through organ donation.

Here's what Kyle's mother, Brenda, had to say:

"It was a such a blessing to be honored with an amazing and one-of-a-kind art piece in honor of my son.

Brian incorporated many of the memories, interests and items of Kyle’s into the art piece. One computer game that my son enjoyed was Minecraft, and Brian made Kyle’s likeness and used many of his computer parts, demonstrating his lifelong love of computers, which included building and repairing computers and gaming.

Growing up, Kyle loved playing with Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, and throughout the art piece, many of Kyle’s interests were made into cards, such as Air Force JROTC, which Kyle participated in high school; Naruto; his love of animals, where he volunteered at an animal shelter; walks and hikes; cooking; and Nirvana, which was one of Kyles’s favorite bands.

The characters from Toy Story – Woody, Bullseye, Buzz and Zurg – each had a card too. Kyle loved watching this movie over and over and over again as a child. Also included in the art piece was a likeness of Kyle’s dog that he picked out when he was a puppy. Kyle named him Darrell.

Some of Kyle’s items were included too – his noise-canceling headphones, mouse, Zip drive and a koozie from his place of employment, Woolpert, where he was a Geospatial Technician and worked with LIDAR software. The software was also represented on one of the cards.

Thank you so much, Life Connection of Ohio, for honoring Kyle and all that you do for donor families. I’m still amazed and proud of Kyle’s selfless act of saving three lives by being an organ donor."

Today, Life Connection of Ohio recognizes Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, in celebration of the end of slavery on June 19, 1865.

From our friends at the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation: "Juneteenth invites us to reflect on our shared history while recommitting ourselves to creating a future rooted in equity, opportunity and belonging. We recognize that advancing health equity requires acknowledging the social, cultural and historical factors that continue to influence access to healthcare, organ donation and transplantation. We remain committed to fostering meaningful dialogue, promoting inclusive practices and advancing equitable outcomes for the diverse communities we serve. As we honor Juneteenth, we celebrate the countless African American donors, recipients, donor families, healthcare professionals, researchers, advocates and community leaders whose contributions continue to strengthen the donation and transplantation community and inspire future generations."

This piece was created in honor of Andy Reinman, who gave the gift of life through organ donation.

"After getting over the shock of Andy being selected for the honor, I found myself very apprehensive. I kept trying to imagine how a piece of art that truly represents Andy could be created from just a few items and some written life details. Since I never spoke directly to Brian, I feared the lack of direct communication would cause misunderstanding of the stories and items shared," Andy's wife, Sarah, said. "When the day came and I was finally allowed to see the art – ask anyone, I’m not patient – I found myself dumbfounded. Anyone who knows me well, knows just how hard it is to make me speechless. After months of anticipation, the creation could not have been more appropriate for my hero! It represents him and the things important to him in a unique manner. Brian was even able to inconspicuously represent Andy’s and my eternal love for the son we lost to a failed adoption by using Andy’s love for Marvel and Baby Groot (BG). While most probably think that's the reason for BG's incorporation, those who know the personal significance of BG in our life get how meaningful that inclusion is. The artist shared that he even created BG by using some driftwood he personally owned. Brian gave up his own property to create a piece of art for someone he never knew because he believed in the power of organ donation.

I’m incredibly touched by this honor. I look at how many heroes there are and how many were able to donate more organs, tissues, etc., yet my hero, my hubby, is just as valuable! I’m forever grateful to Life Connection for their recognition, continuous support of donor families, and the services they provide to the people in need of a miracle!"

ATTENTION: KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS! It's International Knit in Public Day, and Life Connection of Ohio needs comfort shawls for our donor families.

Although organ donation offers a silver lining in the midst of a tragedy, donor families are still forced to face the painful reality of leaving the hospital without their loved one. Life Connection of Ohio tries to provide some comfort by offering families a handmade shawl at the time of their loved one’s donation. Families often wrap themselves in the comfort shawl to feel close to their loved one.

The preferred size is 30 inches x 50 inches, and the preferred colors are blue, green or neutral.

If you are interested in knitting or crocheting comfort shawls for our donor families, visit https://bit.ly/3eJusit.
