Sherry Griffeth is grateful for her gift of life every single day – and especially during National Minority Donor Awareness Month.

Take it away, Sherry:

"At 36 years old, I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), a life-changing diagnosis that began a long and challenging health journey. Years later, at 51, I received the incredible gift of a liver transplant – an opportunity that gave me more time, more purpose and a deeper appreciation for every day. I will always be grateful for my donor and their family, whose gift made it possible for me to continue living, growing and serving others. My donor's selfless gift turned my darkest season into a renewed journey filled with purpose and hope. With every milestone I reach, I hold deep gratitude for the second chance I have been given to live, love and give back.

After my transplant, I found a new direction in the medical field, beginning with a degree in medical billing and coding, then earning my BSHA and MHA. I am starting my final semester of my DHSc, which includes research on improving not only transplant education but also organ donation awareness so that more individuals may live to experience life as I have. A goal that once felt far beyond reach.

The greatest highlight of this journey is not only what I have accomplished, but what I am still here to experience – especially the blessing of being alive to enjoy my grandson, Ezra. My story is one of resilience, gratitude, faith and purpose, and I hope it reminds others that even after life’s hardest chapters, there can still be meaningful new beginnings."

After years of heart health issues and almost five months on the waiting list, Donerik Black received a life-saving heart transplant on February 26, 2015 – the day before his 45th birthday.

“I think of the man who donated his heart to me daily. I think about him most when I am doing something that I thought I would never be able to do again. If it wasn’t for that man’s selfless decision to be a donor, I wouldn’t be here today,” Donerik said.

Especially during National Minority Donor Awareness Month, Donerik is determined to spread the word about the importance of organ donation.

“I need to be an ambassador for organ donation, especially when I look at the numbers and see that African Americans are disproportionately affected. I have a responsibility to engage, educate and inform people – and give them a call to action,” Donerik said.

Life Connection of Ohio was proud to sponsor the 17th annual Toledo Pride celebration last weekend, where we shared that who you love does not affect your ability to Donate Life.

Shout out to our volunteers for braving the heat at northwest Ohio's largest event for the LGBTQIA+ community and for encouraging attendees to let their pride live on through organ donation! 🌈
