Life Connection of Ohio is proud to recognize team members and partners who go above and beyond in embodying our organization's core values – let's go mentality, uncompromising advocacy and authenticity.

Meet Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center Surgical Tech Kari Schwierfert, a Donation Difference Maker!

Kari was nominated by Life Connection of Ohio Manager of Surgical Services Julie Sparks, who said:

"Kari is a true Donation Difference Maker. Although her normal work schedule is second shift, her dedication goes far beyond her assigned hours. Whether an organ procurement occurs at 5 AM, 3 PM or even 10 PM, it is very common to have Kari serving as the scrub at St. Vincent Medical Center. Her willingness to pick up extra hours and additional shifts – always with a positive attitude – ensures donation can happen when it matters most. Kari consistently steps up without hesitation, even for the most complex cases, including the full organ procurements involving five separate teams where she expertly manages the entire sterile field as the sole scrub. Her professionalism, adaptability and commitment exemplify teamwork and excellence. Thank you, Kari, for everything you continue to do to support successful donation, assist your coworkers and bring a positive, can-do attitude to every situation. Your impact truly makes a difference!"

Thank you, Kari, for partnering with us to serve families and save lives!

We are taking a look back at Tammy Sprow's live interview from our 24-hour Toledo-area Green Chair Donate Life Sit-in. Tammy's husband, Cory, gave the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation 13 years ago.

“My daughters were 6 and 9 when the accident happened, so for me to be able to say that he’s truly a hero is something that has gotten us through. Being able to donate is the ultimate silver lining – it takes something negative and turns it into something so positive,” Tammy said.

When reflecting on her daughters reaching adulthood, Tammy said: “There is a lot of pressure that comes with being a solo parent. Not only the physical responsibilities, but the responsibility of being a role model, particularly for me raising daughters. I’d like to believe that watching my work with Life Connection of Ohio modeled how we can create good and choose joy even as we navigate unimaginable grief.”

On May 17, Life Connection of Ohio volunteer Mary Crow and her family were recognized at Day Air Ballpark as Mary's granddaughter, Izzy, threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Dayton Dragons Professional Baseball Team game.

Izzy's father, Michael, loved his family and loved dogs, and he especially enjoyed sports. When he was younger, he wanted to be a Major League Baseball first baseman.

Sadly, 32-year-old Michael passed away on October 28, 2022. But his story did not end there, as he continues to live on in the four lives he saved through organ donation!

Life Connection of Ohio would like to welcome Mike Green to our life-saving team! Mike will serve as an Organ Recovery Coordinator at our Toledo Regional Office.

"I’ve known of Life Connection because I live in the area and we were required to make referrals in the ER. One day, an Organ Recovery Coordinator (Riley) came to my charge desk, and I started picking his brain. I was seeking a better career life that is fulfilling, professional and most importantly safe. Now, I am here. The environment and staff I've met on day one has been outstanding. I know I made the right choice," Mike said.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month!

From our friends at the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation: "This month, we celebrate the vibrant cultures, rich histories, and lasting contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders across the United States. We honor the trailblazers whose strength and service have shaped generations [and remember] that culturally rooted leadership is essential in building equitable systems, especially in healthcare and transplantation."

Right now, more than 9,000 AAPIs are waiting for a second chance at life. Although people of different ethnicities can donate to each other, achieving a more diverse donor registry would increase everyone’s chances of receiving a life-saving organ transplant.

On Donor Remembrance Day, Life Connection of Ohio, Solvita and Lions Eye Bank of West Central Ohio partnered with Premier Health to host two donor remembrance ceremonies. During these emotional events, heroes who gave the gift of life through organ, eye and/or tissue donation at a Premier Health hospital in 2025 were recognized, and their families heard from Pam Fultz, wife of donor hero Michael Keith, and Larry Trimmer, a grateful cornea transplant recipient.

"Being part of this community means each of us carries a story – one that includes love, loss and ultimately, a decision that brought life to others in the midst of unimaginable grief," Pam said. "To my fellow donor families: Thank you. Thank you for your courage, your compassion and your willingness to say 'yes' in one of the hardest moments of your lives. Your loved ones have made an impact that will never be fully measured, but it is deeply felt. And to my late husband: This work, this purpose, this journey – it's all for you. Your life mattered. Your gift mattered. And your legacy continues every single day."
