A 1987 graduate of Kettering Fairmont High School, Michele (Altick) Clark shines in today’s alumni spotlight. In 1999, Michele came back to Kettering Schools as a visual arts teacher at Van Buren. While her home base has been Van Buren for most of her career, she has also taught at Fairmont High School and Kettering Middle School. This year, however, Michele moved to JFK to teach our young Firebirds. Michele has also been a cheerleading coach and the advisor of Film Club and Art Club over the years.
Michele has fond memories of her years at Croftshire Elementary with her best friends, Jenny and Shelley. She loved everything about being a student at Van Buren Junior High, especially Mr. Taylor’s art class and her 7th grade English teacher Mr. Bradfield. In high school, core memories include times with Ski Club, going to Friendly’s after football games, and hanging out at the Captain Kidd Drive-In on Saturday nights. She also loved Theater Under the Stars, dances, and her art and film classes.
Today, Michele still enjoys many of the hobbies she explored as a kid. She enjoys the art of film making as well as movie and music trivia. You can often find her hanging out with Shelley, her best friend since kindergarten at Croftshire, and spending time with her daughter Antonia.
Spending her career giving back to the community that raised her means the world to Michele.
“I have lived in Kettering for almost my entire life. I love the history of Kettering; the memories of my old stomping grounds. I love Van Buren, because it always felt like home to me. I still cherish many of my teachers from junior high school, and I was blessed to call some of them colleagues. I love teaching the children of my friends, and now the children of my former students. I was also blessed to teach art to my daughter at Van Buren Middle School.”
Michele’s strong connection to Kettering extends beyond the schools. Her father, Robert Altick, served as a Kettering Police Officer and Detective for 25 years. Michele holds a special place in her heart for the KPD.
Since Michele says, “I absolutely LIVE to tell stories about Kettering during the ‘70s and ‘80s,” let’s all share our own childhood memories in the comments below!
