Amethyst Place

Amethyst Place Supportive housing program for women and children in recovery. Since opening its doors in 2000, Amethyst Place has served over 900 women and children.

After more than two decades of transforming lives and healing generations, we believe our work is more than a mission; it’s a noble cause. We inspire transformational healing and empower generations of women and children to achieve recovery, reunification, and resilience. Each year, we provide nearly 200 women and children in Kansas City with truly comprehensive, family-centered care to help them

overcome the interconnected cycles of poverty, trauma, and substance use to achieve multi-generational impact. Each of our residents is provided with furnished apartment space, therapy, case management, financial assistance, a variety of classes, recovery coaching sessions, and other programs to build up their life skills, self-confidence, and relationship/social skills.

With 155 children on campus and counting, preparing for a new school year is no small undertaking.

This year, members of the faith community, corporate partners and kind supporters came together to help ensure every Amethyst Place child could start the school year set up for success.

From backpacks and school supplies to new shoes and uniforms, our community showed up in a big way. We are especially grateful to Trinity Temple C.O.G.I.C., River’s Edge Church, Rolling Hills Church, nbkc bank, The Deron Cherry Foundation, National Council of Jewish Women, and the many individuals who contributed. 💜

As our kids return to the classroom, they do so knowing there is an entire community cheering them on!

Three weeks. Three graduates. So much to celebrate. 💜

Congratulations to Tonia, Lisa, and Jessica, the first graduates of the Women's Employment Network (WEN) cohort held right here on the Amethyst Place campus!

Latrese Kabuya, our Clinical Innovation Manager who leads our partnership with WEN, has watched their journey over the past three weeks:

“These ladies are proof that hard work pays off! We saw them begin to move from fear and uncertainty toward confidence, growth, and believing in themselves and what is possible.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone takes courage. These women showed up, put in the work, and continued to take steps toward their goals. We are so proud of each of them and excited to see what comes next!”

We’re grateful for our partnership with Women’s Employment Network and for the opportunity to bring resources like these directly to Amethyst Place families. 💜

A little look back at Bloom: last year. 💜

So many milestones along the journey of recovery happen quietly. At BLOOM, we get to celebrate them loudly.

Join us Saturday, September 26 at Zhou B. Art Center as we celebrate the strength, growth, and achievements of Amethyst Place moms and children and all they’ve accomplished over the past year.

If you’ve walked alongside our families, supported our work, or believe in what’s possible when families have the opportunity to heal and thrive, we’d love to have you in the room.

Admission is complimentary. 🌸

Back-to-school preparation went beyond notebooks and new shoes. Thanks to a generous grant from Thermo Fisher Scientific, Amethyst Place moms and children also received salon-quality hair care products selected to meet a variety of hair types and needs.

Local cosmetologist and educator, Christina Williams, joined us for a special distribution event, helping moms better understand the products and offering guidance for caring for their own and their children’s hair.

It was one more way to help our kids head into the school year feeling cared for, prepared and confident.

Thank you for helping AP families build confidence from head to toe!

Inspiring Voices: Meet Joyce 💜

When Joyce came to Amethyst Place, she had one goal: to get her life and her children’s lives back. Through her journey, she has discovered that recovery is about more than sobriety. It’s about healing, finding peace within yourself, rebuilding relationships, and learning to love and respect yourself again.

Since coming to Amethyst Place, Joyce has earned her Peer Support certification, started two jobs, and most importantly rebuilt her relationships with her children. She’s proud to be creating a life where she can give her kids the love, support, and stability she once struggled to provide.

“I’ve found peace within myself, and I now have hope for my kids to never have to deal with my trauma.”

Her advice to anyone beginning a similar journey? “Progress, not perfection. Breathe, and take it one step at a time.”

Joyce’s story is a powerful reminder that every step forward matters. We’re proud to celebrate her resilience, growth, and the future she’s building for her family. 💜

The FAM Team is committed to creating opportunities that support healing, connection, and personal growth for the families we serve. 💜

At our recent Art It Out group, participants gathered to create beaded suncatchers while practicing mindfulness and creative expression. The activity offered more than a chance to make something beautiful; it created space for participants to connect with one another, share encouragement, and experience the sense of community that is so important throughout the recovery journey.

Each handmade suncatcher serves as a reminder that healing can be found in creative moments, meaningful relationships, and the support of a caring community. Through programs like Art It Out, the FAM Team continues to foster spaces where individuals can grow, connect, and thrive.

Every woman deserves the opportunity to build a future filled with purpose, stability, and possibility.

Through our partnership with the Women's Employment Network (WEN), Amethyst Place moms are gaining the tools and confidence to take the next step in their career journeys. From resume building and interview preparation to professional development and financial guidance, these workshops help equip women with the skills they need to achieve lasting economic independence.

When organizations come together with a shared commitment to empowering women, the impact reaches far beyond employment. Together, we're helping mothers build meaningful careers, strengthen their families, and break generational cycles of poverty, creating brighter futures and lasting legacies of resilience, stability, and hope.

Thank you, Women's Employment Network, for partnering with us to invest in the potential of every mom. 💜
