Each week, Kansas City-area entrepreneurs share their businesses, ideas, and challenges with the community, followed by questions, feedback, and connections. More than 40,000 patients in the U.S. may qualify for this potentially life-saving cancer procedure., but only a fraction are receiving it.

For Joseph L. Hayhurst, MD of Hayhurst Medical Technologies Inc., that gap became impossible to ignore.

His work started with a medical device designed to improve CRS-HIPEC treatment (cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy). But as he dug deeper, he discovered another problem: potentially eligible patients weren’t making it to the specialists who perform the procedure.

Now, Hayhurst Medical Technologies is developing software to identify those patients using data already buried in hospital reports and route them to the appropriate specialists.

“This is their last resort.”

Joseph shared the problem, the opportunity, and what he’s building with the 1 Million Cups Kansas City community in September.

“30 days is not enough.”

When Lyndsey Bibler presented the Sonrisa Foundation at 1 Million Cups Kansas City, she talked about a gap that’s easy to miss: what happens after the immediate crisis is over?

Our domestic violence response system provides critical emergency shelter, safety planning, and advocacy. Sonrisa Foundation is working toward what comes next, with a vision for transitional housing and holistic recovery support for survivors of domestic violence and their families.

Lyndsey also challenged the room to think about something we all participate in: **the language we use when we talk about violence, survivors, and the people who cause harm. Words matter.**

This is exactly the kind of conversation we want at 1 Million Cups KC. Founders and community leaders bring an idea, a problem, or a vision into the room, and we get to learn from each other, ask questions, and help move the work forward.

What does it actually mean to be trauma-informed?
For Lyndsey Bibler of The Sonrisa Foundation, it starts with something pretty simple: meeting people where they are. Sometimes the person who seems agitated, disruptive, or checked out is carrying something you can’t see.
“If all that you have to give is 30%, and you give 30%, that’s actually 100%.”
A little grace goes a long way.
