Recovery is weird.

One day you're fighting every urge to pick up. The next day you're getting excited because you made your bed, showed up to a meeting, or finally answered a phone call instead of hiding.

Recovery is weird because the things that used to feel impossible become normal:
Doing everyday tasks.
Sitting with uncomfortable feelings.
Saying "I was wrong."
Asking for help.
Enjoying a quiet night instead of chasing chaos.

If recovery feels strange, awkward, or completely different than the life you knew, you're probably headed in the right direction.

Keep showing up. Keep doing the next right thing. Stay Weird.

It's a Welcome House baby!

Please join us in congratulating CORE+ graduate Ben and his family on the arrival of their newest family member. Mom, baby, and dad are all healthy and doing great.

Ben completed one challenging program at Welcome House. He's now beginning an even tougher one that includes midnight wake-up calls, mystery stains, and absolutely no graduation date.

We're so proud of you two, and excited for this next chapter. Welcome to the world, little one. You've got an entire recovery community rooting for you.

12 Steps in 12 Months | No Reservations

Step six asks us are we really ready to let go of the defects we've relied on for years? Ready to stop defending the attitudes, behaviors, and resentments that have kept us in a feedback loop?

That means no more hanging on to the parts of ourselves we secretly think we still need. No "except for this one." No "maybe later."

This step in our recovery challenges us to trust that what we gain is far greater than what we give up.

Today, take an honest look at what's still holding on. Are we really ready?

Last weekend's Welcome House barbecue brought together residents, alumni, staff, volunteers, family members, and friends for an afternoon of food, games, laughter, and connection.

Recovery is often talked about in terms of what people leave behind. What gets talked about less is what they gain: friendships, community, and a place to belong.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a great day.

Is there a sweeter way to end the week? We don't think so.

Thank you to our volunteer Christian for stopping by with these incredible cakes from his mom's bakery, Mariana’s Pâtisserie, and for sharing the exciting news that he'll be starting medical school soon.

Both the cakes and the news made our Friday a little sweeter.

Our volunteers bring kindness, generosity, heart, and occasionally a few extra calories along with their impact. Congratulations, Christian! We know you'll do great things!

"Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us- sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them."
-Alcoholics Anonymous, pg. 84

The promises of AA can seem hard to imagine when we begin our recovery journey, but after a while they take root and grow into our reality. Doing the next right thing is the work. Every next right thing is a win. One win after another. One day at a time.

Liberty in recovery doesn’t come from pretending we’re okay. It comes from finally being real. The guilt, shame, fear, and secrets that kept us sick lose their power when we bring them into the light.

-A Million Miles in 12 Steps

It's always bittersweet to say goodbye to a graduate of the house, but we know how to make the send off a blast! Congrats Casey Norris, the Welcome House and Kansas City will miss you, brother!

We’re still riding the energy from an unforgettable morning at the 13th Annual Welcome House Breakfast.

The room was full. The stories were real. The impact was undeniable.
From powerful moments on stage to the connections happening at every table, this event was a reminder of what’s possible when a community shows up for recovery.

If you couldn’t join us, here’s a look at what you missed. This is a good time to plan to be there next year!

Because this work doesn’t stop when the room clears. Every day, men walk through our doors looking for a chance to start over. And every day, this community helps make that possible.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, supported, and continues to stand alongside recovery.
