Shelly, the Sulcata Tortoise needs your help. She wandered from her enclosure three days ago near the Houston/Cabool area in Missouri. She is roughly 30 to 40 pounds and surrounded by forested area. If anyone sees her, please contact us immediately so that we can let the owners know. If you are able, please contain the tortoise so that it does not continue to roam. With the weather cooling it will soon be unsafe temperatures for her at night. Any and all help is appreciated. Please share this post and if you are in the area and can offer to help search, let us know and we will put you in touch with Shelly’s owner.

Jammy is still looking gaunt and the eyes are still concerning. We are continuing to provide water for soaking and started IV fluids. She’s eating like a champ. In these pictures, she is eating crappie fillets. We know recovery will take time. She didn’t lose this much weight overnight so she’s not going to gain it back that quickly either. With a continued hydration regiment, we are hopeful that her eyes will improve . She seems to have a will to live and as long as she’s willing to try, we are too.

I just thought I would give you all an update. But before I do, I want to say thank you to everyone who has expressed so much care and concern for the snapping turtle that came in yesterday. Many of you expressed that she needed to be in water, this we knew, and after snapping those pictures, we immediately put her in water. She is in a homemade pool in an outdoor enclosure that allows her to soak with only the very top of her shell out of the water. We were advised to not have her fully submerged until she’s a little stronger. With this level of water, she will be able to swallow her food and still soak and get hydrated. We were also informed that she cannot eat outside of the water which has also been addressed. While my expertise has been with tortoises and Box Turtles, and I freely admit, I’ve never rehabilitated a snapping turtle before, I do have basic knowledge of their species. I knew that she ate in the water because she’s an aquatic Turtle what I did not know is that she needs to exclusively eat in the water. I think we are all a work in progress and have room to learn. I have been educated and will continue to move forward with her care.

Now for the update, she has eaten five raw chicken strips and some nightcrawlers. She has had multiple water changes so that she has freshwater continually. She is able to crawl out of her water so that she can be on land if she chooses to be. She was much more alert today and actually had her head up watching me mow the yard nearby. I plan to give her intravenous fluids as soon as I have someone here to help me. Tomorrow she will be getting fish and we will continue to rotate the protein that she gets so she has variety in her diet. I also have some alligator chow that we will give her on the water when she’s healthier and can find it easier. I will continue to research their care and several people have offered their help if I will reach out to them and I plan to do so.

I am so very grateful that everyone is showing this level of empathy for a species that is often hated by so many. Thank you again for all your support, kind words, and knowledge. We will continue to update you and I plan to post pictures tomorrow of her eating.

Warning! The following pictures will be disturbing if you are sensitive to animals in distress.

Today I received a phone call from a neighbor that they had found a large snapping turtle that appeared to have been abused. They were worried it would get ran over by the combines or other harvest equipment. She’s blind in one eye and the other eye doesn’t look very well. She is extremely old as well as emaciated and dehydrated. I told my neighbor to bring her to me and I’d see what I could do. I soaked her in water and just fed her some raw chicken and blackberries. I’ll go outside and check here in a little bit to see if she had the strength to eat.
While I am pretty certain that this condition is age related and her eyes could’ve been injured in the wild and this has affected her ability to eat.
It just seems with this species humans have no problem, abusing and torturing them. If that’s the case, I hope whoever did this knows that this tells me all I need to know about the type of person you are.

Three new intakes today. A young red-footed tortoise with the name Tortatara, which my granddaughter, who is a soccer fan, changed to Hollin. A three-toed-box turtle that I named Raya, and an ornate box turtle my granddaughter named Rose.

It has been a crazy busy weekend here at the rescue. Saturday I made a trip to Concordia, MO to pick up a sulcata tortoise named Jack and bring him back to the rescue.

Sunday, a new insulated shed for Rocky was delivered and set in place by Bob F. and his son. Bob built the shed from the ground up and even put electricity in it for heat and lights. We can’t thank the Fuller’s enough for their hard work, time and for supporting our rescue in such a meaningful & generous way! Rocky‘s going to be living in style now.

This evening, two young boys named Braxton and Bentley adopted a Hermann’s Tortoise named Hazel. They will have the help of their mother as they navigate being tortoise owners. They seem dedicated to learning all they can and to providing Hazel with a great home.

This is a courtesy post: Bowser is a six year old sulcata tortoise. He weighs approximately 25 pounds and is looking for a new home. The owner has said he is willing to drive up to 10 hours from the St. Louis area, to deliver him to the proper, knowledgeable and loving home. If you have a very large yard or acreage and would love to add a large, personable tortoise to your family... Bowser might be the one. We will be taking applications on behalf of Bowser's owners in order for them to make an informed decision about where Bowser lives out his life. Visit www.tortoiserunfarm.com and fill out an application, please mention Bowser in the application.
