When Jeanne Manford marched alongside her son Morty in the 1972 Christopher Street Liberation Day March with a sign that said, "Parents of G**s: Unite in Support for our Children," she could not have predicted what was to come:

Co-founding Parents of G**s, the predecessor to PFLAG, to help parents learn to embrace their children's sexual orientation. Being named a grand marshal of both the LGBT Pride Parade in Manhattan in 1991 and the first Queens pride parade in 1993. Posthumously receiving the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal. A plaque on a church commemorating the location of the first PFLAG meeting. A street in Flushing, Queens, named after her, her husband, and her son.

When Jeanne bravely marched with Morty, she had no idea she would spearhead an organization that's still going strong 53 years later with over 350 chapters and more than 550,000 members and supporters. What she knew was that she loved her son and felt in her heart that parents should not be ashamed to publicly support their gay children.

None of us can predict the future or what the history books may say about us, but we can look for opportunities to be brave. We can speak out against injustice and fight for what we feel in our hearts is right.

Whether our actions help one person feel seen or start a movement that impacts many, we can lead with love like Jeanne and see where it takes us. 🩷

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved friend Mitch Levy.

Mitch began his journey with PFLAG many years ago when he attended meetings with his beloved Mother. Later Mitch would go on to assume a leadership role and kept PFLAG Long Island running. He devoted countless hours of his time to running the most amazing support group meetings. Mitch eventually had to step down from his role as President due to health issues. Before he made that difficult decision, he made sure he had a strong Board in place to step up and continue with the group. Although he was no longer able to attend meetings, he would reach out to make sure we were thriving. This speaks volumes of Mitch's devotion.

On a personal note, when I began my own journey, Mitch was the first person I reached out to. He responded to my email with a remarkably simple statement, “we have a meeting coming up and you really need to attend.”

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Rest easy dear friend.
