Join WFLI & ROC United for a New York Women's Strategy Session on Thursday, October 6 from 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Although a monumental step forward, Gov. Cuomo's bill establishing a $15 minimum wage bill in New York State left out nearly 400,000 tipped workers, who actually saw their wages decline as part of the same bill. In fact, the bill was achieved by compromising out these workers -- meanwhile, more than two-thirds of these workers are women, disproportionately women of color, who suffer from the worst poverty, lack access to reproductive health and justice, and experience the highest rates of sexual harassment of any industry in NYS or in the country, precisely because they must rely on customer tips to feed their families.

ROC United, hosted by the WFLI, is convening Long Island women's organizations, advocates, and allies to learn more about the issue and join us to organize in New York State to correct the mistake and make sure these women are paid at a rate that's closer to a family-sustaining wage like everyone else.

Please RSVP by Friday, September 30th

Elaine D. Harmon, a pilot in WWII, was buried at The Arlington Cemetery despite previous legislation that prevented females from being buried alongside their male counterparts.

The remains of Elaine D. Harmon, who died in 2015, were laid to rest, representing a triumph for the WASPs, an often forgotten part of the war effort.

WFLI is proud to announce that our very own Malisa Ali, Director of Programs, will be honored by Long Island Business News at the annual Millennial Awards. These Millennial Awards honor the “bright and dynamic young professionals who are part of the millennial generation, who contribute to the Long Island community through public service and who have made significant strides in business”.
Bright and dynamic doesn’t even begin to describe Malisa…she is also savvy, talented, compassionate, skilled and an absolute asset to WFLI. She has been instrumental in growing and expanding our GirlsFli Young Leadership Program into the significant success story that it has become. Mentoring high school girls and equipping them with the tools and guidance they need to become successful community leaders, Malisa’s positive impact on these girls will be felt throughout their lives.
We have no doubts that Malisa will continue to have a strong impact in our communities going forward and we are also certain that this will not be the first award that finds its way to Malisa! Way to go Malisa, we are so proud of you and this remarkable achievement!
