First Fridays Youth Open Mic

First Fridays Youth Open Mic First Fridays Youth Open Mic is coming back from hiatus! Learn how you can get involved! https://linktr.ee/firstfridaysjp

First Fridays is a project of the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain. It is a safe space for youth (covering a broad age-range) to share their talents and perspectives, and experiment with various forms of artistic expression. First Fridays is a public venue where people of all faiths and identities are welcome to be themselves and to be accepted for who they are. It is also a place of intercul

tural and interracial conversation and relationship-building, where youth and adults can process their struggles in life, share their faith, dreams, and ideals, and learn more about issues of social, economic, and environmental justice. With all that, it is simply somewhere for youth and people of all ages to come on a Friday night to have a good time. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency which is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, administrated by the Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism, and Special Events.

Our next open mic on July 3rd is a special one and we would love for you to join us! It marks a full year of the mic’s comeback (after the pandemic hiatus) as well as a bittersweet farewell to a member of our community.

We will be celebrating with a potluck party! So bring your friends and your favorite dishes to share, sign up to perform or just come for hang.

Excited to have the dynamic duo Ricky and Ana Breznik as our featured artists. You do not want to miss this.

About featured artists:

“Ricky Shah is a composer, improviser, orchestrator, and multidisciplinary artist from London, United Kingdom, and a recent graduate from Berklee College of Music. His fascination with mysticism, the interconnectedness of life, and the undefinable, organic and boundless nature of reality features heavily in his work, consisting of music, poetry, and movement, informed by his roots in classical impressionism, expressionism, and avant garde jazz.

Ana Breznik is a multidisciplinary artist and a scientist, whose practice spans theater directing, acting, dance, and poetry. She graduated from Harvard College in 2024, where she studied both Biology and Theater. Her work is deeply interwoven with topics of cyclicality, the inseparable ties between humans and nature, menstruation, and Slovenian mythology. She also works as a biology researcher, studying the mechanisms of uterine regeneration and menstrual disorders, which has greatly inspired her artmaking and reinforced her belief in the reciprocal relationship between art and science.

Their shared passions have brought them together to create experiences that capture fragments of the infinite through improvisation of music, poetry, and theatrical performances.”
