There is an important fight right now to preserve the historical Oneida Bungalow Court in Jacksonville Florida. It is a 24 house Community with a gas station all developed in 1925. The Bungalow Court was listed on this year‘s 11 most endangered historic sites in the state of Florida by the Florida trust for Historic Preservation. It has gained an unbelievable amount of media attention locally but this unfortunately has not translated to any meaningful support from city officials. The property is still very much at risk of demolition. It is likely the last African-American bungalow court in the State of Florida. It is one of only two from this era in the City Of Jacksonville, and it is the last remaining concentration of houses left in one of the oldest African-American neighborhoods in the City Of Jacksonville. This is just a small segment of the rich history of this unusual surviving development.

I know this post isn't pretty, but if you are in Florida or from Florida, this is SO IMPORTANT. They want to basically turn our state parks into golf courses.

"Gov. Ron DeSantis’ environmental agency is considering plans to turn some of Florida’s vaunted park space into areas that feature more recreational amenities — including more lodges, golfing, pickleball courts and disc golf courses, according to a news release sent by the state this week"

Please read the article below from the Tampa Bay times, share the information, and attend the meetings if you can!! If not, call and write DEP and let them know this is not ok

Jax Tenants Union has two big events this weekend. Please share!

If you're going to donate food, beware of expiration dates as well as what is required to consume the food. Hamburger helper for example requires additional food items to cook it that not everyone has access to. Non pop top cans are not accessible to those without can openers.

Clothing donations are a great sustainable way to get rid of items that no longer fit, but make sure they're in good condition. Passing along trash just burdens someone else with your trash.

The legal rights zoom meeting is also important! Knowing your rights ahead of time makes a big difference. Tenants should not be forced to live in unsafe conditions such as mold or should not be forced to make repairs that the landlord must cover. Know your rights so you can tell what's wrong when needed.

If you read this and think "why is this on sustainable duval" then you need to Google intersectionality. Sustainability is not just cutting down on surplus and making swaps, it's also ensuring that EVERYONE has enough to live.

If you have plants and like them, really consider learning to propagate and sharing those propagations.

I usually propagate pothos and when I have a bunch, I give them away at the end of the driveway. A neighbor took some for his daughters that had been asking for pothos. A few days later they saw me and thanked me. I offered them some monstera I had rooted and they were over the moon. It's such a simple thing but it is a way to give to friends and family outside of capitalism. Especially with as much as they sell plants for now 🙃

Propagation is also usually beneficial to your plants!! You can also start or donate to a local plant swap!

PETITON TO BRING BACK THE MAKERS SPACE. I usually don’t share personal information here, but I do feel like this petition is important so please read if you have time!

I always wanted to learn to sew, but I never took the time to learn from my grandmother. When she passed, I was left with her sewing machine. I was too scared to use it because I didn’t want to break it. Luckily, the Jacksonville Downtown Library had the Jax Makerspace where you could learn hands on how to sew for free! I attended the class in January 2020.! Sewing is such a valuable tool in life. It has allowed me to repair items that have broken and to repurpose old fabrics into something new! I now even use this skill to upcycle vintage and thrifted fabrics into new things such as tote bags, reusable cotton rounds, and more! This class gave me a very important life skill and a way to feel a new connection with my grandmother.

The Jax Makerspace is more than just sewing though!
“Jax Makerspace programs and activities emphasize making and creating for customers of all ages, whether through arts and crafts, technology, music, or writing. Programs include guitar lessons, acrylics painting, 3D design basics, digital photography, and more. We support aspiring authors with program topics on blogging and publishing, and encourage DIYers with classes such as bicycle repair.
We also offer equipment for self-directed use, such as sewing machines, a Silhouette Cameo, a green screen and ukuleles. In development are stations for Virtual Reality, music production and digitization.”

The Jax Makerspace has been shut down since Covid and still does not have a reopen date. I imagine several of us have the same/similar stories or would like the ability to have those stories!!! These skills are important to provide to our community and can literally be life changing! Please sign our petition to ask the library to reopen the Jax Makerspace!!!
