Our mission is to protect North Florida’s quality of life through acquisition and restoration of its irreplaceable lands. NFLT achieves their mission by purchasing or receiving donations of land and conservation easements, as well as facilitating conservation transactions for public agencies. Working closely with public agency partners, private landowners, foundations and other land trusts, we ens

ure that what we preserve today remains protected. NFLT has a core service area of 7 counties in Northeast Florida, and work on an as-needed basis throughout the state. As a private not-for-profit we survive on the giving of the community, both in cash donations and volunteering. Your contributions are an important piece in the achievement of our mission. This past weekend, volunteers rolled up their sleeves on two very different landscapes with one shared purpose: restoring the natural systems that make North Florida wild.

At Smith Lake Preserve in Keystone Heights, volunteers from four different organizations joined North Florida Land Trust, Santa Fe Audubon, and Florida Power & Light to plant native sandhill species along the Florida Trail and throughout the preserve. Wiregrass, Dixie aster, Deerberry, Gopher apple, and Garberia don’t just belong here—they help rebuild habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife as we continue restoring this landscape to its natural state.

Meanwhile on Amelia Island, community volunteers planted 300–400 sea oat plugs at Little NaNa Dune, helping stabilize the dune system and slow erosion. Sea oats are critical to the health of Florida’s coastal dunes, with deep root systems that trap sand, withstand harsh coastal conditions, and strengthen the shoreline over time.

Conservation doesn’t stop when land is protected. It’s ongoing, hands-on work and it only happens because people show up for the places they love. Thank you to every volunteer who helped make these projects possible.

Friends, we're working hard to make North Florida more beautiful and more green for all of us. Please don't make our jobs harder by dumping your trash in our preserves. 😥

It wasn’t here before and now it is. That’s exactly the point. 🌱

After a series of prescribed burns at Smith Lake Preserve, something we're very excited about has returned—pinewoods milkweed.

This native wildflower thrives in fire-dependent landscapes like longleaf pine forests. For years, it can lie dormant beneath the surface, waiting for the right conditions. And fire—when carefully applied—is what brings it back.

Prescribed fire clears out dense undergrowth, opens the canopy, and returns nutrients to the soil. In doing so, it creates the exact conditions species like pinewoods milkweed need to reemerge.

Milkweed is a critical host plant for butterflies including the Monarch and Queen species. Its return is a sign that the ecosystem is functioning the way it should, supporting pollinators, increasing biodiversity, and restoring balance.

At Smith Lake Preserve, this is what restoration looks like. Not just what you see immediately after a burn, but what comes back because of it. 😊
