Hear about how Walking Softer Education participating teacher Zayra La Puerta has allowed her students to shine, by believing in them and letting them take the lead on their Walking Softer Education supported projects.
Zayra teaches at Colegio Marista Guaynabo in Puerto Rico, where her multiple student groups have designed projects related to reducing single use plastic, educational beach cleanup campaigns, to creating a garden on campus!

As part of the Walking Softer Education program Berkeley High School freshman English teacher, Zia Grossman-Vendrillo, and her students host a Climate Conference for the whole freshman class. Students help plan and decide what workshops are hosted at the conference, ranging from field trips to waste management stations to climate poetry. These students are helping make a difference for their peers, and being exposed to the many different ways to make a positive change for the environment.

In September, I had the privilege of getting to know, learning from, and welcoming Walking Softer’s newest cohort of Young Leaders during a retreat in Lake Tahoe.

Reflecting on how each of the Young Leaders showed up in Lake Tahoe left me thinking about leadership as a whole and pondering the qualities that each of them exemplified that seem to sit at the heart of meaningful leadership: commitment to values, perseverance, curiosity, and authenticity.

We’re headed to Portland, Oregon, this October for the NAAEE 2026 Conference, and we’re excited to be part of the program!

On Thursday, October 9 at 8:30 AM, Walking Softer Education Manager, Jackson Ray, and Education Program Coordinator, Andrea Garcia, will be presenting “Empower Youth, Activate Change: From Learners to Leaders.” This Bright Spot will highlight how the Walking Softer Education model supports educators and funds student-led, community-based environmental solutions. Featuring a student-designed climate conference and additional project examples, the session will explore how environmental education can foster civic participation and empower students to become leaders of environmental impact in their communities. We’ll also be exhibiting at Booth #17, so be sure to stop by and say hello!

The theme for this year’s conference is
“Imagine If..” - a great invitation to think creatively about the future of environmental education and the possibilities that emerge when we collaborate.

Meet Tina. She’s been a Walking Softer Education participating teacher for two years with Red Oaks Forest School. Red Oaks students have worked on multiple different projects in a variety of environmental spaces, from rewilding to pop up thrift shops! Hear about how she has seen the different student projects impact her students and their communities in profound ways.
