We had a blast at EarthFest yesterday! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat about protecting Hoosiers & our environment with data center moratoriums. 💚

This may have been the first time CAC tabled in such close proximity to a tortoise in our 52 year history. 😆

A big thank you to Earth Day Indiana for organizing such a stellar and uplifting event!!

“Rather than rushing into decisions, we believe it is responsible to take time to study the facts, evaluate real-world impacts and learn from a project developing right next door before determining what may or may not be appropriate for Merrillville" said Council President Rick Bella. 👏🏼

Note: the Metropolitan Development Commission was going to hear the ordinance on 6/3, but they've pushed the hearing date to 7/1, and they're still accepting comments via email.

Many communities are fighting proposed data center projects over the financial and environmental costs.

“It is urban, it is suburban, it is rural,” said Citizens Action Coalition's Kerwin Olson. “We haven't found a community yet that wants a data center.” 💯

The cost of cleaning up toxic coal ash does not have to fall exclusively on ratepayers, said our Program Director Ben Inskeep.

“It’s a choice of who pays for them,” Inskeep said. “It’s a choice of whether or not Duke’s shareholders pay for them or Indiana ratepayers pay for them through higher rates.

“Our regulators and lawmakers have tried to force us to pay for the bill rather than the utility’s shareholders, which are responsible for allowing these messes to take place,” Inskeep continued. “The utilities just don’t want their shareholders to foot the bill. They’re just trying to take home a larger profit rather than do the right thing.”
