Did you know? Studies have found that states with stronger gun safety laws tend to have lower rates of gun-related deaths.
During National Youth Violence Prevention Week, it’s important to look at the data and consider how policy, prevention, and community action can work together to save lives.

Gun violence does not impact all communities equally.
In Indiana, when it comes to youth and firearm-related deaths, communities of color are disproportionately affected. During National Youth Violence Prevention Week, it’s critical to recognize these disparities and work toward solutions rooted in equity, prevention, and community support.

During National Youth Violence Prevention Week, it’s important to understand what youth violence looks like in our own communities.
In Indiana, nearly two-thirds (63.4%) of firearm-related deaths among youth ages 1–19 are homicides. Another 29.6% are suicides—highlighting the urgent need for both violence prevention and mental health support.
Prevention starts with awareness, community engagement, and access to resources. This week, take time to learn, share, and be part of the solution.

As conversations continue about the future of Riverside Sundays, community members recently gathered near Riverside Park for a peace walk focused on unity and reducing violence.

Organizers say the goal is simple: bring people together and create safer spaces, especially for young people in the area.

The walk is part of a broader effort tied to violence prevention and community engagement.

This comes at a time when Riverside Sundays faces growing uncertainty, with vendors saying permits are no longer being issued and enforcement may increase.

Some in the community are now asking: if the gatherings are changing or being limited, what replaces them, and how do we keep the sense of community while improving safety?

Yesterday, we showed up for peace. ✌🏿✌🏾✌🏽✌🏼✌🏻
Hundreds of neighbors, young people, and community leaders came together to stand against gun violence and lift up youth.

The Peace Walk was a reminder that change happens when we come together, and it can be fun.

It was powerful to join neighbors, youth leaders, advocates, and community partners in standing together for peace, safety, and opportunity for our young people. The walk serves as part of Indianapolis’s observance of National Youth Violence Prevention Week, which this year runs April 20–24, 2026.

Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, families, and young leaders who showed up to walk for peace and to affirm that every neighborhood deserves safety, dignity, and hope. Indianapolis is strongest when we come together to reject violence and invest in community.
