WNCC UMC Disaster Response Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church Disaster Ministries page.

A place where United Methodist members and churches share their stories and connect within the Western North Carolina Conference of the UMC. Disaster Ministries has three priorities: Readying, Resourcing, and Responding:

READYING: refers to our work and ministry in advance of anticipated and unanticipated disasters and crises. RESOURCING: refers to our work and ministry that continually aids to c

ommunities affected by natural and human-caused disasters inside and outside the United States. This includes operating our Mission Response Center, collecting and distributing supplies, maintaining response equipment, and providing grants and funding to disaster response ministry. RESPONDING: refers to our work and ministry within an immediate disaster.

Our Blue Ridge Regional Team is managing diverse housing recovery projects to meet the unique needs of our communities:

📍 Canton (Haywood Co.): Rebuilding a historic 1930s generational home requiring a new roof, windows, electrical wiring, and furnace replacement after severe wind and basement flooding.
📍 Buncombe Co.: Executing critical clean-outs and prepping heavily damaged mobile homes for major structural restoration.

A massive thank you to the Presbyterian volunteer group from Leechburg, Pennsylvania, for providing the vital boots-on-the-ground labor to advance these projects! We are also grateful to Canton Presbyterian Church for providing excellent lodging for our hard-working crews.

A huge thank you to the volunteer team from Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem for spending a full day of hard work at our Ministry Response Center.

This crew jumped right into organizing and assembling donated cabinetry and built-ins so our field teams can deploy them to sites smoothly. By strengthening our central hub, their efforts directly ensure our field construction teams have exactly what they need to get neighbors back into safe, sanitary, and secure homes.

Most days, you can find Kasey Kelly keeping our ministries on track as Administrative Assistant for Western NC Conference, United Methodist Church Mission Engagement and Disaster Relief & Recovery. But she recently spent two days with our High Country team in West Jefferson, getting a firsthand look at their daily operations.

"The staff welcomed me with incredible hospitality, sharing meals, stories, and a clear passion for the work they do. At one point, Doug looked around and reminded me that "the mountains are his office"—and under a perfect blue sky, it was easy to see why.

The highlight of the trip, however, was meeting our clients. Watching them look at their homes slowly being rebuilt helped me connect my "behind-the-desk" administrative work directly to the physical structures going up on the ground. It was a powerful reminder that every role in our conference is vital. Whether we are managing logistics in an office or swinging a hammer on a roof, we are all working together to ensure our neighbors return to safe, sanitary, and secure homes."

Effective disaster response requires functioning equipment just as much as it requires willing hands. At our Mission Response Center, Manager Reed Thomas and the team are busy refurbishing our mobile shower trailers—sealing roofs and repairing pipes so they are ready to deploy across our recovery sites.

Got plumbing, mechanical, or construction skills? We always have a project waiting for you. Contact us at [email protected] to find out how your skills can serve our neighbors.

This month, we welcomed a volunteer team from Christ Church NYC in Manhattan, as they traveled to the High Country to help us rebuild.

Their primary focus was working on the restoration of Valle Crucis Church, which sustained significant damage during Hurricane Helene. Recovering from a disaster of this scale requires rebuilding both the homes our neighbors live in and the community spaces that bring them together.

“This is home.”

Those were Mike’s first words as he navigated the new ramp and entered his build-in-progress this week.

We just passed our second structural inspection, and while there is still significant work to be done, we are thrilled that Mike experienced his new space for the first time today.

Pine Grove United Methodist Church is a small church located on the Avery–Mitchell county line. The congregation has generously opened its doors to serve as the offices for the growing AMY disaster team. Brent Nidiffer is the pastor, and his wife, Juanita, serves on the WNCCUMC disaster staff as a Disaster Case Manager.

In the aftermath of the storm, Pine Grove prepared thousands of hot meals for survivors and volunteers in need. The church also offers a medical loan closet for anyone who requires assistance. Twice each month, they distribute groceries through two separate food programs. During the winter, they provide a weekly soup meal and deliver it to those who are unable to leave their homes.

We are deeply grateful to be part of a small church that is making such a big impact.

We were honored to host Dawson Spencer and Donna Miller from North Carolina Department of Public Safety Emergency Management to see some our work first hand. Rebuilding after Hurricane Helene requires coordination at every level. We appreciated the opportunity to discuss how we can continue working together to secure safe and permanent housing for survivors across our conference.

We are in this together for the long haul.
