Who knew,

A girl with a trumpet and a dream would do all of these amazing things starting here at PVAMU!

A cadence captivated my heart before I knew from which it came.
Before I identified its uniform or even learned its name.

God’s grace and hands were kept me so I could bear witness to His plans.
He opened my eyes to an amazing culture and electrifying marching bands.

My eyes lit up as I watched them flash their horns.
Then, I looked at mother and told her, “One day I’ll join the Marching Storm.”

That dream came true as I marched with pride on the U SIDE of that V.
Playing and fighting back tears in my eyes while marching to E.T.

Time kept flying and life kept changing as if I had a choice.
Then, one sweet day, I picked up the mic and showed the world my voice.

A sound that filled arenas and stadiums, could never be destroyed.
That same little girl with a trumpet and a dream told the world to MAKE SOME NOISE.

Cheers to the girl whose first microphone was a hairbrush and teddy bears were her first audience. Thank you to the The PVAMU Marching Storm and Prairie View A&M University for pouring into me. Thank you every band director who instilled those core values in me. To my family and tribe and supporters, I could not have done this without you.

As for me, I’m just getting started. 💜💛 ⛈️🫶🏾🎤

The Pepsi National Battle of the Bands unites students, staff, and alumni from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) from across the country to champion their campuses. The competition, established in 2014, is all about bragging rights—a victory Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm knows well.

The band was founded in the 1940s. Up to 400 freshman audition each year for 120 spots. And once in the band, students rehearse five hours a day throughout the school year and 16 hours a day during summer camp.

“That’s the level of energy and work it takes to do a show like this,” says Director of Bands Timmey T. Zachery, who has led the Marching Storm since 2012.
