Eureka! It's time to learn with The Lighthouse! Don't forget to register for our STEAM camp next week. This week, campers will make science fun with Mad Science, get hands-on with gardening, and take a free trip to the Children's Museum on Wednesday.

With school out and summer right around the corner, The Lighthouse of Houston is excited to announce our Youth Specialty Camps, all designed for blind and low vision youth and their siblings.

Camps take place Monday through Wednesday, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Camp fees are $10 per week, and financial assistance is available.

Running from June through July, our camps offer something for everyone. Whether performing on the stage, going mad with science during STEAM week, leveling up with accessible video games, learning about podcasting, hitting the field for sports, or learning essential life skills in our Shine & Dine camp, we have it all!

Each camp is crafted to help youth learn, grow, and gain confidence in a supportive, inclusive environment, all while having an absolute blast. Spots fill up fast, so now’s the time to check out the full schedule and register for a summer of discovery, creativity, and fun!

Have you listened yet to last week’s episode of Sightless Voices?

Lonnie Bedwell, blind adventurer, U.S. Navy veteran, and single father, shares how a hunting accident instantly took his eyesight, and his three daughters pulled him out of despair.

“My daughters, they changed my vision more than the loss of my eyesight ever did.” - Lonnie Bedwell

Lonnie talks about rebuilding his life, learning daily skills from scratch, and eventually becoming a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year through adaptive skiing, mountaineering, and kayaking the Grand Canyon blind. He breaks down how pride, fear, and pity hold us back, and how purpose pulls us forward.

During , June 8-14, we celebrate the incredible, highly trained professionals who provide life-changing Vision Rehabilitation training and services.

Almost 20 million people in the US live with blindness and vision loss that creates significant challenges with everyday activities, but less than 5% of people who would benefit from services are actually receiving them.

The Lighthouse of Houston offers a broad range of Vision Rehabilitation programs, training, and support that can dramatically increase confidence, safety, and independence, including our Low Vison Clinic, Assistive Technology Training, and Orientation & Mobility.

"It's critical for people to get as much use of their vision as they can," said Dr. Kia Eldred, Low Vision Diplomate and Low Vision Optometrist at The Lighthouse of Houston. "I think that not enough people know that we exist and that we are here to help people. We need to be here to help parts of the population in Houston that might not be able to be assisted otherwise."

Barbara is just one of the more than 14,000 individuals who we provide support to annually. Since her diagnosis of advanced macular degeneration and geographic atrophy, she's been participating in our behavioral health services and making regular visits to our Low Vision Clinic for care.

"Most of my interactions are with Dr. Eldred. She's just highly knowledgeable and believes there is an answer for everything," Barbara said. "I couldn't have done it without her."
