No Greeks Need Apply

This ad was published in the Omaha Daily Bee on February 9, 1916, and it is a sobering reminder of the way Greek immigrants were treated in this country when they first arrived in the United States.
With his latest round of attacks on four first-year members of Congress who are women of color, President Trump has once again touched the raw nerve of racism in American life.

He has also tapped into one of the oldest strains in our politics — the fear and vilification of immigrants and their descendants.

Although three of the four women were born in the United States, the president said they should all "go back" where they came from. That phrase has echoed down generations of nativist discourse as successive waves of newcomers have been targeted by individuals, groups and even whole political parties.

In the past year, many of you have supported my StellaNova Foundation and our efforts on behalf of the homeless, veterans with PTSD, and the communities served by The Montrose Center. The AHEPA 29 Charitable Foundation was among those who provided support. Our list of beneficiaries in 2024 included the AHEPA Service Dogs for Warriors campaign, through which we honored the late Anthony Kouzounis and General Cokinos with service dogs named in their honor.
