Sculpture Month Houston

Sculpture Month Houston SMH hosts a yearly exhibition of sculptures and 3D art, designed as site specific installations. Volker Eisele
President and Principal Curator

Sculpture Month Houston (SMH) was founded in 2016 as a forum for sculpture and installation art. Its mission is to provide an opportunity for artists, primarily in the Houston area and Texas, to showcase their work and to participate in a comprehensive art discourse. Organized as a yearly event, the main exhibitions take place during October and November at The Silos at Sawyer Yards, an agro-indus

trial relic turned into dramatic art spaces. The cylindrical silos are a unique backdrop for art; at the same time they are a challenging, site- specific arena in which to exhibit. Every two years, as a Biennial Festival, over 40 participating art venues are invited to exhibit three-dimensional art throughout the city. This Festival directs attention to the diverse creative energy of local, regional and national installation artists and sculptors. It joins a succession of existing art celebrations, like Foto Fest and the rotating art exhibitions at the Buffalo Bayou Cisterns, adding to Houston’s reputation as an art-enthusiastic city. There have been a total of six yearly exhibitions at “The Silos”, and they have solidified the reputation of Sculpture Month Houston as a respected promoter of all things multi-dimensional. SMH fills a niche by exclusively presenting three-dimensional art. Over the past six years approximately 150 artists exhibited their work. Not only were these exhibitors from Houston and Texas but also from neighboring states. The exhibitions provide a truly immersive experience as visitors are encouraged to enter the individual silos and engage directly with the art. Frequent tours and artist’s talks promote a deeper understanding of the work presented as well as educational experiences for students and the general public. Sculpture Month Houston has established an accredited program within the Sculpture Department at the University of Houston. Also, there is an active process for engaging college art students as well as high school seniors to participate in exhibition tours and discussions. Past exhibitions at "The Silos":
2016: From Space to Field
2017: Tensile Strength
2018: Peak Shift
2019: Outta Space
2021: Altamira
2022: Synaptic
2023: The Sleep of Reason
2024: Solid State (in process)

Please come and celebrate Sculpture Month Houston and its "Re-Figurations" exhibition. One more time, wander around the dramatic Silos art spaces that one art critic has dubbed “one of the weirdest venues for displaying art in Houston”. One last time, immerse yourself into the “avant garde” installation art that our artists have created for your reflection and enjoyment.

Meet several of the exhibiting artists in person. They would be happy to be quizzed about their vision and concepts. Also, you will be treated to libations, multiple tours of the exhibition, performance art, and creative vibes in the air.

Special Performances:

3:30pm - Jonathan Read: Tales From The Spitting Tree: Ballad of The Moon Hound
"Born out of the animatronic works I developed to combat my loneliness during the pandemic, TFTST explores themes of alienation and the unfair nature of luck in the universe. The story is acted out by a cast of puppets crafted from cheap battery powered toys, foam clay and day glow paint, filmed on a table in my studio. The story centers around a depressed wolfman who learns that an encounter with an angry gorgon during his youth stripped him of his destiny. He has no path or purpose in life as he wanders the dangerous psychedelic wilderness where he encounters an army of imps, a giant crab monster and other strange beasts as he tries to figure out if he is blessed or cursed." This presentation of the short film will be accompanied with a live score by Philosophy Stone (Jon Read and James Radcliff).

4:30pm - Nestor Topchy: An Approach to Archery and Painting

Please join us for our closing reception and then we will see you next year in October!

Please join us for Misha Penton's performance on Saturday, November 8 at 3:30pm after the public exhibition tour by curator Volker Eisele from 2pm to 3pm at Site Gallery Houston.

Singer Composer Misha Penton transforms Site Gallery with voice, flute, and electronics in immersive soundscapes that blur song, ritual and installation. Vox Machina is a dreamlike encounter with possible futures, where ancient stories and emerging technologies converge in the human form. Created for the atmospheric architecture of the Silos at Sawyer Yards, the work resonates with Sculpture Month Houston’s Re-Figuration theme, inviting audiences into poetic spaces of wonder, reflection, and deep listening.
