Hello all you beautiful people. As you may or may not know, Writespace Houston will close its doors in December, so this will be our last community mic. If you’ve looking for a sign to share a poem/story you’ve been working on (or just need a safe place to vent about life’s endless frustrations in a dramatic fashion), this is it!

This month’s featured reader is Leslie Archibald, who will be reading from her forthcoming chapbook! For those who haven’t had the pleasure, Leslie is one of the backbones of Writespace. She has done so much for the organization over the years, and I couldn’t ask for a better opener. Leslie will also share the stage with those who have helped her along in her writing journey, each writer a titan in their own right.

Thank you everyone for being a part of our journey. It has been an honor, truly, and I hope you can make it out. We will also provide food and drink for the event.

Hello, everyone,

This is a notice that Writespace Houston will be closing its doors permanently at the end of 2025.

Writespace began in 2014, founded by local writer Elizabeth White-Olsen with a mission of providing affordable workshops for writers in Houston. From the beginning, Writespace was a place where writers of any genre or background could meet and find community. Writespace has been a home for many writers in Houston and beyond who wanted a space of their own.

However, the writing landscape has changed dramatically since then. During the pandemic, Writespace was forced to close its doors, and it looked like that might be the end. But a group of dedicated volunteers came together to try and bring Writespace back from the brink. Every single person who has volunteered for Writespace has done so out of their love of writing and this organization. But sometimes, even the best efforts don’t succeed.

Among a shifting larger worldview, Writespace faces unprecedented struggles. Like many nonprofits, we are making the difficult decision to close. We want Writespace’s end to be a positive one, and so, Writespace will be closing.

We still have several workshops planned for November and December that we hope you will check out.

We also invite you to say goodbye at Writespace’s final closing, December 13th at 7pm at our studio in Sabine Street.

We leave you in good hands. Houston is rich in literary opportunities, and we will be out in the world contributing to those and will continue to support your writing journey

Thank you for ten outstanding years,

The Writespace Board

Are you intrigued by writing poetry with strong visual elements but don’t know where to start? How do we communicate meaning through shape and spacing?

In this workshop led by Katherine McDaniel, we’ll be experimenting with representational, semi-representational, and abstract shapes. If you have poems you would like to convert into concrete poems, please bring them. If not, prompts will be provided.

Sign up through Writespace Houston’s Eventbrite page, which can be found following the link in our profile or in the comment below!

Katherine McDaniel is the founder and editor of the literary and visual arts magazine and arts incubator Synkroniciti. She is a classically trained opera singer and a twenty-year veteran of the acclaimed Houston Grand Opera Chorus. She taught voice lessons for singers for twenty years. She also teaches faerie garden, flower tiara and wreath-making playdates, which are designed to inspire and exercise creativity. In 2012, Katherine had three poems commissioned by Houston Grand Opera for Houston Artists Respond, part of the Home and Place Initiative. Nubia’s Shoes, Yo soy un Corazòn, and Drumming were inspired by videos of senior adults at Baker Ripley Community Center in Houston. The poems tell the stories of Latin American women who immigrated to the United States. She has been published in Gleam: Journal of the Cadralor and often reads her poetry at Archway Gallery’s monthly readings.
