What does welcome really look like?

It's more than a greeting. It's a stocked refrigerator, a helping hand, a new friendship, and a community that says, "You belong here." ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿ

As we recognize World Refugee Day, we're reminded that welcome is something we build together. Every act of kindness helps create hope, stability, and belonging for refugee neighbors beginning again in Houston. ๐Ÿ’š

Every number represents people, relationships, and new beginnings. ๐Ÿค

This past month, we saw volunteers step forward, Welcome Teams launch, essential household items delivered, and families supported through food, friendship, and community.

We're especially encouraged by the launch of three new Welcome Teams, including a Youth Mentorship pilot partnership and a Spanish-speaking team that is helping create new pathways for connection and belonging. ๐Ÿซ‚๐ŸŒ

None of this happens alone.

It happens because volunteers, donors, partners, and neighbors choose to be part of the welcome.

Thank you for helping refugee families find stability, dignity, and hope as they begin again in Houston. ๐Ÿ’š

Hope tastes like shared meals. ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿค

There is something powerful about gathering around a table.
A shared meal can turn strangers into friends, create space for stories to be exchanged, and remind us of our shared humanity. Across cultures and communities, food has a unique way of bringing people together. ๐ŸŒ

As part of our HOPE Away From Home campaign for World Refugee Day, we're celebrating the connections that are built through hospitality, conversation, and meals shared with neighbors.

For refugee families beginning again in Houston, moments of welcome often start around a tableโ€”where friendships grow, cultures are celebrated, and belonging begins.
Because everyone brings something valuable to the table.

Join us in creating a community where every neighbor is welcomed with dignity, connection, and hope. ๐Ÿ’š

Hope sounds like laughter, storytelling, and new friendships. ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿค
Imagine arriving in a new country without speaking the language, understanding the culture, or knowing anyone. Suddenly, even the simplest daily tasks can feel overwhelming.

That's why Welcome Teams matter.
Volunteer Welcome Teams partner with a refugee family as they settle into life in Houston. Along the way, they help connect families with resources, build community, and offer one of the most meaningful gifts of all: friendship. ๐Ÿ’š

The impact isn't found only in practical support. It's found in shared meals, conversations, celebrations, laughter, and the relationships that grow over time.
Consider volunteering with Houston Welcomes Refugees and helping create a sense of belonging as families begin again. โœจ

Everyone brings something to the table. ๐Ÿฒ๐ŸŒ

This World Refugee Day, weโ€™re celebrating the stories, traditions, and flavors that help make our communities rich with culture and connection.

Todayโ€™s cuisine spotlight features Mantu โ€” traditional Afghan dumplings made with thin dough, filled with seasoned beef or lamb and onion, then steamed and topped with creamy garlic yogurt sauce, tomato sauce, dried mint, and fresh cilantro. ๐Ÿค

Recipes like these carry more than ingredients.
They carry memories of home, family gatherings, hospitality, and resilience.
From preparing the dough to sharing the finished meal around the table, food has a powerful way of creating belonging across cultures and experiences. โœจ

At Houston Welcomes Refugees, we believe every family brings something meaningful to our community. Every shared meal is an opportunity to connect as neighbors.

Understanding the refugee journey begins with understanding one important truth:
No one leaves home lightly. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿค

Refugee families often spend years navigating uncertainty, waiting, paperwork, interviews, and transition before finally arriving in a new community to begin again.

The journey can include leaving behind homes, careers, loved ones, and familiar routines in search of safety, stability, and hope for the future.

And when families arrive in Houston, the journey of rebuilding continues.
Thatโ€™s where community matters. ๐Ÿซ‚

A warm welcome, a furnished home, a shared meal, or a caring volunteer can help create belonging during an overwhelming season of transition.

As we recognize World Refugee Day this month, we invite you to learn more, listen deeply, and be part of creating a community where refugee neighbors are welcomed with dignity and hope. ๐Ÿ’š
