A big thank you to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church for putting welcome into action!

Their community generously donated Welcome Kits and joined us at the warehouse on Saturday to help put them together and prepare essential items for refugee families beginning again in Houston.

We’re so grateful for church partners who give their time, resources, and hearts to help welcome refugees. 💚

Welcome begins before a family ever arrives.

Behind the scenes, organizations and community members are preparing essentials, gathering Welcome Kits, coordinating groceries, and helping make sure families have support waiting for them when they reach Houston.

Arrival is just the beginning, but thoughtful preparation can help those first days feel a little less overwhelming.

Swipe through for a look at what happens before the welcome begins. 💚

Welcome has an impact on everyone involved.

“I was so humbled to be a part of a Welcome Team and grow in my understanding of the challenges that refugees face. As a future physician, I feel that this experience gave me better cultural sensitivity and empathy that will stick with me as I see a diverse patient population throughout my career.”

This is what welcome can look like: relationships that build understanding, broaden perspectives, and shape how we show up for others long after the experience itself.

We’re grateful for every person who chooses to learn, connect, and be part of a community of welcome.

Our warehouse has a brand-new mural, beautifully created by high-schooler and local artist, Eunice! This space is where donations are received, Welcome Kits are prepared, volunteers come together, and countless acts of welcome begin, so it feels especially meaningful to have artwork that reflects the hope and community found within these walls.

Thank you, Eunice, for bringing this message to life and creating something that so beautifully reflects the heart of HWR. 💚

Our Country Spotlight series continues with Ukraine. 🇺🇦

More than four years after the full-scale invasion began, millions of Ukrainians remain displaced from their homes, including 3.7 million people displaced within Ukraine and 5.9 million refugees living abroad as of February 2026.

Behind these numbers are families navigating separation, uncertainty, and the challenge of beginning again while carrying their culture, traditions, and connections to home with them.

Swipe through to learn more about Ukraine, the experiences of displaced Ukrainians, and what beginning again can look like for those building new lives in communities like Houston. 🤍

A bag of groceries can be one of the first acts of welcome a refugee family experiences in Houston. 🤍

As newly arrived families wait for food assistance and work authorization, Grocery Deliveries help provide familiar ingredients and essential food for their first days in a new home. Just as importantly, each delivery brings a friendly face and a reminder that they have a community here.

Interested in providing a Grocery Delivery? Your first step is attending an HWR Orientation. Visit the link in our bio to learn more and register.

How does the United States determine how many refugees may be admitted each year?

Under U.S. law, the President establishes an annual refugee admissions ceiling after consultation with Congress. This number represents the maximum number of refugees who may be admitted during the fiscal year, but it is not the same as the number who will ultimately arrive.

For Fiscal Year 2026, the refugee admissions ceiling is 7,500, compared with 125,000 for Fiscal Year 2025.

Swipe through for a closer look at what the Presidential Determination is, how the refugee ceiling is established, and what these numbers mean for the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

A big thank you to the Encouragers Life Bible Study at Houston’s First Baptist Church for showing up for our newest neighbors!

Their group recently dropped off a generous collection of Welcome Kits filled with essentials that will help refugee families settle into their new homes and begin again with dignity and care.

We’re so grateful for church partners who turn welcome into action. Thank you, Encouragers, for helping us build a community of welcome! 💚
