A Wonderful Ikenobo Ikebana Gathering in Houston 🌿
Yesterday, October 6, Houston hosted a wonderful meeting with Professor Mikako Arashi of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society in Kyoto, Japan. The event was organized by The Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Texas together with Ikebana International Houston Chapter 12.
The highlight of the morning was a beautiful ikebana demonstration by Professor Arashi, assisted by Vivian Miller. It was inspiring, elegant, and, as always with ikebana, a little magical — just a few branches and flowers, the right arrangement, and suddenly we forget about time.
A warm atmosphere, good friends and colleagues, Japanese aesthetics, and the beauty of ikebana — a wonderful way to spend a morning!
🌿 Ikenobo ikebana proved once again: sometimes all it takes to create beauty is simply putting a branch in the right place.

Last month’s JFest ’26 workshop was for beginners—their work was anything but! Investing in the experience already speaks to their passion for Ikebana, yet the results surprise me every time.
So grateful to my I.I. Houston friends & fellow ikebanists, and to those who came from near & far (including my zoom student from NC), for the incredible support—from setup to cleanup & everything in between.

Thanks to all the fabulous volunteers and the exhibitors who made Chapter 12's Japan Festival Exhibition a success. There were 28 exhibitors from the four schools and 48 arrangements showing the creative range of ikebana. The workshop with Shaila Shah brought delight to the participants who surprised themselves with the beauty and innovativeness of their very first ever ikebana. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Akemi Saitoh, the Chapter co-president was a champion in coming early to volunteer, make a very large arrangement then don her kimono and assisted with the Tea Ceremony for the rest of the day. 🙏🙏🙏 Elena's large homage to her Ichiyo School headmaster anchored one corner with Shaila Shah's floor arrangement celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Sogetsu School anchored the other. Kudos to you both. Letty and Susan created a refreshing and delicious hospitality lounge to support the group throughout the day. Panta and Susan who set up and cleaned up - where would we be with you and all the volunteers??! A deep bow to you all!!!

Ikebana International Houston Chapter #12 marked Ikebana Day 2026 with a touch of ingenuity. Shaila Shah instructor with the Sogetsu School led an engaging demonstration and workshop on “Using Paper in Ikebana” With Agapanthus in short supply, paper stepped in gracefully—lavender, pink, and white sheets transforming into clusters, shards & flecks of creativity with that Sogetsu flair.
Shaila’s presentation sparked lively interaction with the audience, who listened with great interest, asked thoughtful questions, and enthusiastically created their own arrangements.
Set to the smooth sounds of Japanese jazz, the afternoon unfolded with equal parts artistry, experimentation and fun with these flora aficionados followed by a scrumptious potluck that ensured no one left hungry for either inspiration or food.
