Ikebana International Houston Chapter #12 marked Ikebana Day 2026 with a touch of ingenuity. Shaila Shah instructor with the Sogetsu School led an engaging demonstration and workshop on “Using Paper in Ikebana” With Agapanthus in short supply, paper stepped in gracefully—lavender, pink, and white sheets transforming into clusters, shards & flecks of creativity with that Sogetsu flair.
Shaila’s presentation sparked lively interaction with the audience, who listened with great interest, asked thoughtful questions, and enthusiastically created their own arrangements.
Set to the smooth sounds of Japanese jazz, the afternoon unfolded with equal parts artistry, experimentation and fun with these flora aficionados followed by a scrumptious potluck that ensured no one left hungry for either inspiration or food.

Ikebana Day, observed on June 6th, celebrates the Japanese art of flower arranging. The date originates from the traditional belief that beginning a classical art on the sixth day of the sixth month ( ideally at the age of six) brings lifelong growth and mastery of the artform.
This year’s designated flower was Agapanthus. Though the season is nearly past in Texas, we were fortunate to find a few. Hoping they inspire new students and continue to spark creativity amongst seasoned ikebana practitioners and teachers alike.

We were at BBVA Thursday helping them celebrate Asian American, Pacific Islander Heritage Month with an introductory Ikebana class taught by Ichiyo Associate Master, Shirley Bludau. Super fun and good learning!

A bent branch, a fading leaf, an unexpected curve — ikebana reminds us that beauty often lives in imperfection.
Mothers have always known this instinctively!

Houston Chapter #12 reaching out. Sushila Mathew, our Ohara First Degree Master, taught an enthusiastic group of retired Rice University professors how to make a water-reflecting arrangement. It was their first close encounter with Ikebana and their arrangements were wonderful.

Day 2 of celebrations with a six hour workshop by the incredible sister-team; Che-Hwa who is a “Riji” the highest (& eighth!) level of teaching from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana & her sister Sylvia who holds the “Kumon” level, second highest, also from Sogetsu.
Theme; “Making Bamboo Structures using Washi Paper”
The vibrant structures were a sight, their movement almost poetic! Although we were short on time- yup! 6 hrs weren’t enough- Che Hwa & Sylvia edited each of our compositions & gave us the time to talk about about them.
Six hours melted away seamlessly after which we capped it off with a delicious Italian dinner.
We thank Audrey Charlton for her incredible hard work in bringing this last event to us, & ending the year on a high note!
