Yes we are STILL pregnant. Kelsey’s parents came to Houston and have been generous enough to let us use their pool!

Due to Azariah’s growth slowing, the Dr wants him evicted before 39 weeks. Since we are at 38 weeks and 3 days, that’s right around the corner!

Our prayer is that things happen naturally and the cascade of interventions is avoided.

We are going in for a membrane sweep this afternoon that will hopefully get things started.

Azariah has hit the 37 week mark today and all exams this week show he is still good in the womb! We met with a neurologist who was not concerned with the findings of the mri, and though more accurate scans will be needed at birth, he does not forecast immediate interventions needed at birth in addition to those for his heart.

We are in the waiting period and trying to love on others who are in the trenches. Leif, a 3yo with lung failure, is heading home today to be made comfortable in his room because the hospital is out of options. Please pray for his family.

““The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.””

Yesterday was a HARD one. Kels was in a MRI tube for an hour and 15 mins followed by another hour and 45 mins of sonogram scanning.

Azariah’s growth has slowed - though he was in the 30th - 50th percentile in all prior scans, he is now in the 6th. On top of that, they they noted issues with the lower spinal cord, no evidence of a spleen, and a small hole in the diaphragm.

A consult with a pediatric GI surgeon today produced some favorable news - he does not see a need to operate at birth and that the diaphragm can be stitched (if needed at all) when the heart surgery is done. In his experience, there is still a 50% chance that a spleen will be found when baby is scanned after birth, and having no spleen would require an antibiotic regiment - so not the end of the world

The possible tethered spine was out of his expertise so we will meet with a pediatric neurologist soon to see what the implications will be. But we learned that Texas Children’s Hospital is the number 1 pediatric neurology unit in the world, so we are in the right place for whatever needs to be done.

On Tuesday May 26th we will be going for an MRI. Due to suspected heterotaxy sometimes certain organs can be abnormally placed, mispositioned, or missing. Please pray for perfect alignment, and formation of all organs, especially spleen, lungs, stomach & intestines. We thank God that baby Azariah is already a miracle!!

Psalm 139:13-14: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

1st week of appointments and living at the Houston Ronald McDonald house down.

Toured the NICU and had Appointments with OBGYN, neo-natology, pediatric cardiology, heart surgeon

Blessings Found
-Mom and baby are currently doing well and will not require early induction if metrics stay well

-Azariah’s heart is strong, has pretty good balance between the two halves, and has great rhythm.

-The PDA - little bypass vein baby’s use to route cord blood in utero - was found on the EKG and can be utilized in the first procedure

Prayers needed
-Azariah has heterotaxy syndrome - heart is on the right side of his body and the location of the connecting arteries and veins does not conform to any sort of mold, which makes a two side repair very complicated

-Heterotaxy often affects more than just the heart. The formation, location, and usefulness of other organs is often different from the standard blueprint. There is a MRI next week to look more into this

-Total AVSD - hole in the heart which does keep oxygenated blood separate from the de-oxygenated blood like a standard heart does

-Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) with pulmonary atresia - Aorta and pulmonary artery (PA) share the same zip code and PA is very narrow, like a spaghetti straw

Dinner has been donated by a different non-profit everyday during the week with lots of left overs being packaged away and available in the communal fridge.

Everyone is super friendly and we have met so many beautiful families. We also have met a family who was departing the RMH without their baby. There is a heaviness in this place and all kinds of diagnoses that remind us of just how broken of a world we live in
