Picture a country being hit from both ends.

To the north, glaciers are retreating and destabilising, sending floodwater down the mountains. To the south, the monsoon is being supercharged. Shifting jet streams and a warmer atmosphere hold more water vapour, which means heavier rain, more cyclones, more typhoons. So the coast is under water and the highlands are under water in the same season.

Dr. Zaid Abidwahid points to the part that rarely makes the headlines. Dams, hydropower, early warning systems, the hard engineering that richer countries rely on, have only arrived in this region very recently, and the countries facing the worst of it are the ones least able to afford them.

The people who contributed least to the warming are standing in the deepest water.

Allah describes the believers as those who walk gently on the earth. Gentleness with what He created, and with the people who live on it, is not separate from our deen.

May Allah protect those living in the path of these waters and move our hearts to help 💜.

You have probably seen the footage from Nepal this week. A wall of water down the Bhotekoshi, villages and hydropower stations gone, hundreds dead and more than a thousand still missing.

In this clip, Dr. Zaid Abidwahid explains one of the ways this happens. Glaciers are massive, slow moving rivers of ice, and almost all of them are now losing material faster than they gain it. As they retreat they destabilise. Water pools inside them behind natural dams of ice. The surface looks solid. Inside it is liquid. Then something gives, an earthquake in an already fragile region, or simply the melt itself, and the whole thing releases at once into valleys that were never built for it.

Scientists studying Nepal say this particular disaster began with a glacier collapse rather than a burst lake. Different trigger, same story. Ice that held for centuries is no longer holding, and the people living beneath it are the ones who pay.

Allah tells us the earth was placed in balance, and that corruption on it is from our own hands. We are watching what happens when that balance is disturbed.

May Allah have mercy on those who died, return the missing to their families, and give strength to everyone digging through what is left. 💜

Imam Ammar Shahin bought a brand new car in 2015. A sister at the masjid saw it under the parking lot lights and commented on how bright and beautiful it looked. He came out to a crack in the windshield, shaped like a Z, and paid to have it repaired.

A week later she saw it again and said the same thing. He walked out to the same crack, in the same place, in the same shape. The repair shop asked how he had managed to break it identically twice.

The third time, he had his children washing the car at Sunday school. She passed by and remarked on it again. Pulling out of the masjid onto a quiet side street, a truck he had never seen there before threw up a small rock. Same result.

By the fourth time, he stopped fixing it. He only repaired the car once she had left the city.

Does it feel like your spouse stopped noticing you?

The honeymoon phase does not last forever, and nobody warns you about the part that comes after. The disagreements over things large and small. The quiet question of whether you chose right. Errands and cooking that used to feel like time together and now just feel like tasks.

Four things that help.

1) Don't make it personal. The people closest to us often show us the least acknowledgement, because they assume we already know how they feel. Before you decide it is neglect, ask whether it is exhaustion. Is he too busy keeping you safe and provided for, or does he genuinely not care? Those need very different responses.

2) Be kind. If anyone in this world deserves your kindness, it is your spouse. Tell them plainly what you want, at a moment when they can actually hear it, and leave old mistakes out of it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Aisha, verily Allah is Kind and He loves kindness." (Sahih Muslim)

3) Do more of what you both enjoy, including something physical. We get so busy fixing what is wrong that we stop doing what we liked in the first place.

4) Take care of yourself. After years together it gets hard to remember where they end and you begin. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

A brother in Minnesota had been dealing with chronic stomach pain for months. Medication, endoscopy, colonoscopy, MRI. Every result came back clear.

Then a scan showed something in his stomach in the shape of an eye. They first assumed an infection and took a biopsy, which found nothing wrong, and according to Imam Ammar Shahin the doctor told him plainly that this looked spiritual rather than medical.

School is back, which means the bargaining is back too. Ten more minutes. One more episode. Finish this and you can have that.

Sh. Abu Eesa calls this the hardest part of parenting. We cannot get anything done without rewarding them, while we tell everyone that instant gratification is what destroys patience and long term thinking. When people ask him who the great parents are, he points to the ones who have solved this.

Here is one thing from his own box of tricks. The reward for finishing a page or a surah was that he would take them to the masjid.

On paper that reads like reward by punishment. It only works because of what waits for them there. A nine year old walks in and gets treated like a superstar. Adults asking how he is, high fives, a fist bump, maybe a sweet. He leaves feeling like he is part of the gang.

Because that is the thing about children. They all want to be like adults, while we spend our lives wanting to be children again.

Worth thinking about as the year starts. What are you making the prize?

A newlywed sister went to a wedding. Towards the end it was family and sisters only, so she took her abaya off, and everyone commented on her figure.

She ended up in hospital, having lost so much weight that she was on an IV for days, dropping from around 115 pounds to the nineties. Every blood test came back negative. There was no medical reason for any of it.
