We had so much fun at our Red Cross Club Kickoff event over the weekend! Representatives from schools across Oahu gathered to learn more about the Red Cross and explored options for their clubs to participate in throughout the year.

A Red Cross Club is an extension of the local Red Cross where youth participants can serve the community with their friends. Along with training and leadership development opportunities, they can choose mission-related activities in their community, while delivering lifesaving Red Cross services. Throughout the year Red Cross youth will plan and implement projects that can help to make our community safer. We can't wait to see what they accomplish!

Today on World Mental Health Day, Dr. Leilani Ahina-Dawson shared some tips for disaster responders and disaster-affected individuals on how to care for themselves and their community.

When disaster strikes, people need more than food and shelter, mental health support is also vital to recovery. Dr. Leilani has been a licensed psychologist for over 20 years and a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Manager since the 2023 Maui wildfires.

She says her key message is to make space for honest conversations and be there for one another.

“As we support each other’s mental health, we need to be compassionate, empathetic listeners when others are sharing, and the focus is not on problem solving but on validating someone’s experience. Just being a witness to somebody’s challenge can be so affirming and so supportive.” – Dr. Leilani Ahina-Dawson

Being present, listening with empathy and letting someone know their experience matters can help them feel less alone. This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to check in with yourself and the people around you. Listen with compassion, make space for honest conversations and remember that sometimes, simply being there is enough to make a difference.

This home fire safety week take time to create or review your home fire escape plan! Remember to include at least two ways to exit every room in your home.

Here are a few simple steps when making a plan:

1) Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows to meet.

2) Take time to discuss the plan with everyone in your household and practice it twice a year. While practicing your escape plan, teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like. Talk about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.

3) Place smoke alarms on each level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas.

4) In addition to testing your smoke alarms once a month, change the batteries at least once a year, if your model requires it.

5) Check the manufacturer’s date of your smoke alarms. If they’re 10 years or older, they need to be replaced because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions.

If your alarm is in need of replacement, call the Red Cross at 808-739-8111 to place your request and a Red Cross representative will schedule a time for a free installation.

We are currently accepting applications for the Red Cross Dental Assistant Program on Oahu! The program is available to military-sponsored ID card holders. The Dental Assistant Program provides selected participants with hands-on experience in a military dental clinic while developing practical skills and professional experience in the dental field.

Applications are due by November 18, 2026 and the program begins in January 2027.

Take a look back at our recent smoke alarm installation event at Kaumakani Village on Kaua'i! In just a few hours our teams installed 145 smoke alarms. We are so proud of our dedicated staff and volunteers who came out to support the community.
