Why would a career promotion hurt a working family’s financial stability?

For the 29% of Hawaiʻi households in the ALICE workforce, career advancement can cause a family to lose key public assistance, resulting in a net financial loss that wipes out hard-earned progress.

Growth should move families forward. At Aloha United Way, we use our ALICE data to advocate for changes that help career advancement lead to true financial stability.

While school is out, ALICE households face highercosts for childcare and groceries.

In Hawaiʻi, the minimum survival budget for a family of four is already $107,796—and that’s before the extra costs of summer programs. Without school-provided meals, families who are already struggling to afford the basics face even more strain.

Through the AUW Safety Net, we’re proud support incredible partners like the Hawaiʻi Foodbank. Our goal is simple: ensure no child in Hawaiʻi goes without the essentials this summer.
