For Knights BarberShop in Homestead, being part of the Steel Valley means more than running a successful small business, it means carrying on a family legacy and giving back to the neighborhood.

In our newest Roots in the Valley, we sit down with Aaron Knight Sr. to talk about the story behind Knight’s Barber Shop, what it means to carry on that legacy, and his commitment to the community through their annual Community Day celebration and generations of involvement with Steel Valley youth football.

Local businesses like Knight’s do more than serve customers; they bring generations together, support our young people and help build the community we call home.

Just seven miles from Downtown Pittsburgh, Homestead is where the Great Allegheny Passage meets a powerful story of transformation…from steel mill legacy to a vibrant riverfront community full of things to see, do, and experience.

Explore The Waterfront , a dynamic riverfront district built on the former Homestead Steel Works site, now home to shopping, dining, and entertainment with views of the Monongahela River. Find refreshment at Burgatory Bar or enjoy bold flavors at Arabica Robusta Coffee House.

You’ll also find everyday conveniences like Giant Eagle and innovation hubs like Steel Valley Accelerator, showing how this community continues to evolve.

Along historic Eight Avenue, you’ll find public art and easy connections to nearby Munhall and West Homestead. Pick from craft breweries and unique restaurants, or stop by Rivers of Steel in the historic Bost Building and learn more about the region’s industrial and cultural history.

Homestead is more than a stop along the GAP…it’s a place where history, riverfront energy, and local flavor all come together.

One of the biggest conversations coming out of our inaugural State of the Steel Valley was about investing in what's already here while creating opportunities for what's next.

Economic development isn't just about attracting new businesses. It's about supporting the ones already here, connecting owners, improving our business districts and creating opportunities for growth. And sometimes that starts with something as simple as getting together over coffee!

Join Steel Valley Accelerator for coffee and community as we catch up following State of the Steel Valley, share updates and connect with local business owners, SVA board members, organizations and neighbors from across the Mon Valley!

Another great investment in the future of the Steel Valley!
Congratulations to West Homestead Borough on receiving $342,000 in state funding for the development of West Homestead Park!
Investments in our parks and public spaces are an important part of community revitalization, creating welcoming places for families and visitors while strengthening the quality of life in the Steel Valley!

Thank you to State Representative Rep. Dan Goughnour and Sen. Nick Pisciottano for supporting continued investment in our communities.

Pleased to report that a state grant of $342K has been awarded to West Homestead Borough for development of West Homestead Park. Our parks and green spaces are vital to our quality of life, and this is just one way we keep the Mon Valley moving forward.
