On today’s broadcast we talk about the Soviet-Czechoslovak Agreement that was conducted in June 1945. This agreement illegally took Podkarpatská Rus’ / current day Transcarpathian Oblasť away from Czechoslovakia and made it part of Soviet Ukraine.

The Carpatho-Rusyn Society is proud to be a sponsor at this year's 'Simply Slavic' festival in Youngstown, Ohio! Rusyns will be represented, along with other Slavic peoples, at this special 15th anniversary festival—now expanded to three-days of celebration! The event will take place from June 26th to June 28th at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.

Don't miss the ecumenical blessing and parade of flags, as well as the expansive array of food trucks, featuring diverse options of delicious Slavic cuisine. Look forward to the vendor marketplace, where everything from pysanky to apparel and linens will be sold. Additionally, anticipate a variety of Slavic folk bands that will be performing beautiful music from the old-country.

On today’s broadcast we commemorate the 135th birthday of Transcarpathian artist and writer Adalbert Erdeli. He was one of the main figures of mid-20th century Rusyn art responsible for founding an art school in Užhorod that is known today as the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts.

On behalf of the Carpatho-Rusyn Society, we wish you a happy Memorial Day, as we solemnly remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. In a special way, we remember the Carpatho-Rusyns who died fighting for their country. Many were immigrants, or children of immigrants. Michael Strank, born in the Prešov Region of Slovakia, is no exception. Strank is pictured below, along other Marines, in the famous flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Not long after the photograph was taken, he was killed in action. Today, we honor him and all who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
