The Donkey Mill Art Center is a community art center serving West Hawaii residents and visitors at our facility in Holualoa. We also provide art education and experiences in local schools, and throughout our community. We offer classes, workshops, and events for artists of all levels, and present world-class art and culture exhibits year round. Our gift shop provides local artists with a venue to sell their work, and enables art lovers to support the work of local makers.

November brings a full slate of classes and workshops across our studios, including hands-on opportunities for keiki and families. Spaces are still available in upcoming programs, and registration is open now.

This month, we're excited to welcome ceramic artist Robert Moore and artist blacksmith Lisa Geertsen. Find details about their workshops and individual Artist Talks on our website.

Plus, stop by to see what's new in our Gallery Shop and experience our current exhibition, Revisiting Kealakekua Bay, Reworking the Captain Cook Monument, on view through December 12. The Mill is open Wednesday–Saturday, 10:00am–6:00pm.

Used for centuries across cultures, chasing and repoussé are traditional metalworking techniques that transform flat sheets of metal into dimensional works of art. This November, Seattle-based artist blacksmith, and expert, Lisa Geertsen returns to the Mill to teach a beginner-friendly, four-day intensive, Introduction to Chasing and Repoussé.

Designed for jewelry students and anyone interested in small-scale metal sculpture, this workshop offers a foundation in techniques that open up new possibilities for metalsmiths to create depth, dimension, and intricate detail in their work.

Renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa was a pioneer of tropical modernism, known for blending architecture with the natural landscape and creating spaces deeply connected to their surroundings.

In honor of Architecture Month, catch a screening of Bawa’s Garden at the Mill this Thursday, October 29 at 5:30pm. This experimental docudrama traces Bawa’s legacy across Sri Lanka, following a journey to discover the lost garden of Lunuganga and the people and places that shaped his work.

Calling all future architects! Concept + Build + Draw + Document is a hands-on workshop for students in grades 6–12 to explore architectural design alongside local professional architects. Tackle creative design challenges focused on light, sun protection, airflow, and environmental connections or protections.

Jackie Rey’s and the Donkey Mill Art Center are excited to partner in presenting rotating exhibitions featuring Hawaiʻi Island artists. This collaboration extends the Mill’s work beyond its campus, connecting artists with new audiences and creating more opportunities to discover and support the creative voices of our island community.

The first exhibition, Between Sets: Paintings by Bailey Silva, will be on view at Jackie Rey’s Kona from October 22, 2026, through January 2, 2027. An unveiling reception and meet-the-artist event will take place on Thursday, October 22, from 3:30 – 5:00pm at the restaurant.
