The Donkey Mill Art Center is a community art center serving West Hawaii residents and visitors at our facility in Holualoa. We also provide art education and experiences in local schools, and throughout our community. We offer classes, workshops, and events for artists of all levels, and present world-class art and culture exhibits year round. Our gift shop provides local artists with a venue to sell their work, and enables art lovers to support the work of local makers.

Fletcher Lambert is a printmaker, lauhala weaver, and birder based in Kona, Hawaiʻi. He first attended classes at the Donkey Mill Art Center in 2020 at the age of twelve, where he discovered a passion for printmaking. Now eighteen, Lambert has his first solo exhibition on view at the Mill.

Escaping Perfection traces the growth of a young artist finding and strengthening his voice through experimentation, curiosity, surrender, and play.

Visit during open hours to experience the exhibition before it closes on Saturday, June 20, 2026. The Mill's summer hours are Monday – Saturday, 9:00am – 4:00pm.

Each May, the Donkey Mill Art Center closes for a brief break. It is a consistent part of our annual rhythm and allows us to take care of the work that is difficult to do while programs are in full swing and the campus is open.

Our closure reflects the natural cycles around us, where periods of rest support growth, renewal, and long-term care. It gives our team time to reset, reflect, and focus on the campus, including refreshing studios, making facility repairs, and tending to the details that support our programs year-round. It is also a time to prepare thoughtfully for the next season.

We will be closed Sunday, May 10 – Tuesday, June 2.

We will reopen Wednesday, June 3, refreshed and ready for the summer ahead. Starting June 8, the campus will be filled with youthful energy for five weeks as we host our annual Summer Art Experience, welcoming more than 40 keiki and teens. It is a highlight of our year, and this pause helps ensure our team is ready to fully show up for it. We hope to see you again when we reopen.

“One of the things that we're all connected to is water… you’re almost washed with stories when you come into the exhibit.” —Melanie Yazzie

Watch this video in full to hear Yazzie share the inspiration behind Stories of Water and how a single question grew into an international print exchange.

Stories of Water: An International Print Exchange is on view March 28 – June 27, 2026 during open hours.

This exhibition and related programs are made possible by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the County of Hawaiʻi Waiwai Grant, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The Hiroaki Elaine & Lawrence Kono Foundation, Hōlualoa Inn, and our community of individual donors.

The Donkey Mill and our studios will be closed from May 10 – June 2, 2026. We will reopen on Wednesday, June 3 at 10am.

As the exhibition Stories of Water reminds us, water moves through cycles of flow, stillness, and renewal. Each May, we follow a similar rhythm. Our annual closure allows time to tend to the Mill, refresh the studios, and take care of the work that supports year-round programming.

Rest and renewal are essential parts of any thriving system and a value we hold at the Mill. This pause helps us return ready to fully show up for the summer season ahead.

Please note our upcoming summer hours: From Monday, June 8 through Saturday, July 11, the Donkey Mill will move to summer hours. We will be open Monday – Saturday from 9:00am – 4:00pm.
