University of the Nations Community Emergency Response Team (UofN-CERT)

University of the Nations Community Emergency Response Team (UofN-CERT) ...and having done everything to prepare, stand ready. Ephesians 6:13 1.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS:
Addresses hazards to which people are vulnerable in their community. Materials cover actions that participants and their families take before, during, and after a disaster. As the session progresses, the instructor begins to explore an expanded response role for civilians in that they should begin to consider themselves disaster workers. Since they will want to help their f

amily members and neighbors, this training can help them operate in a safe and appropriate manner. The CERT concept and organization are discussed as well as applicable laws governing volunteers in that jurisdiction.

2. DISASTER FIRE SUPPRESSION:
Briefly covers fire chemistry, hazardous materials, fire hazards, and fire suppression strategies. However, the thrust of this session is the safe use of fire extinguishers, sizing up the situation, controlling utilities, and extinguishing a small fire.

3. DISASTER MEDICAL OPERATIONS PART I:
Participants practice diagnosing and treating airway obstruction, bleeding, and shock by using simple triage and rapid treatment techniques.

4. DISASTER MEDICAL OPERATIONS, PART II:
Covers evaluating patients by doing a head to toe assessment, establishing a medical treatment area, performing basic first aid, and practicing in a safe and sanitary manner.

5. LIGHT SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS:
Participants learn about search and rescue planning, size-up, search techniques, rescue techniques, and most important, rescuer safety. Session VI, DISASTER PSYCHOLOGY AND TEAM ORGANIZATION: Covers signs and symptoms that might be experienced by the disaster victim and worker. It addresses CERT organization and management principles and the need for documentation.

6. COURSE REVIEW AND DISASTER SIMULATION:
Participants review their answers from a take home examination. Finally, they practice the skills that they have learned during the previous six sessions in disaster activity.

CERT activation for damage assessment:

We will be assembling Damage Assessment Teams to do damage assessments on the Kona side, South Point to North Kohala. Lane is moving slowly and it is not possible to predict when it will have passed by our Island, but the time range we are predicting for Damage Assessment is Saturday through Tuesday (August – 26-28).

We will need people who will be available to work all day, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Damage Assessment teams will consist of 2 CERTs and a County driver. We will be using County marked vehicles. Licensed radio operators are a plus. We will be using iPads with a program called Collector that will be pre-loaded with appropriate maps and GIS layers.

PLEASE USE THE LINK BELOW TO SIGN UP FOR AN ASSESSMENT TEAM. SIGN UP FOR ALL OF THE DAYS you are available. We will try to coordinate carpools for folks coming from other parts of the island.
