🌭The Hawaii State Department of Education
(HIDOE) announced that 68 public schools will offer free summer meals to children ages 18 and younger, starting June 12. Meals are available Monday through Friday through the USDA’s Seamless Summer Option (SSO)
program. Children do not need to be enrolled in public school to participate.

🍎 Breakfasts will be served from 7:15 to 8:45 a.m. and lunches from 10:30 a.m. to noon. There will be no service on the July 4 state holiday. The SSO program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was established to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer.

🥞 For many of our students, school meals are a vital source of daily nutrition,” Superintendent Keith Hayashi said. “Our cafeteria teams are stepping up once again to make sure kids across Hawaii stay healthy and well-fed this summer. We encourage families to take advantage of these free meals - no sign-up or enrollment needed!

🍗 Free summer meals give every child access to quality nutrition during the summer break so they can return to school nourished, focused and ready to learn,” Superintendent Keith Hayashi said. “Our dedicated cafeteria teams will be working hard to ensure children across Hawai’i stay healthy this summer, and we encourage all families to take advantage of these free meals.”

🍳 All meals must be eaten on campus; no grab-and-go options are available. Children do not have to be enrolled at a participating school to be served, and meals will consist of solid foods. For special diet accommodations, email [email protected] with as much detail as possible.

🍌To qualify for the SSO program, schools must have at least 50% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and host a summer
program on campus. Please review the list of participating schools below carefully, as some locations have changed since last summer.”

🌊As we announce the recipients of our 10th scholarship season, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude!!

Ten years ago, this journey began with one scholarship and a simple hope to help a student move forward. Over the years, we have watched this grow into something bigger than we could have imagined. Families, businesses, organizations, volunteers, donors, mentors, and community members have all stepped in and helped create wave after wave of generosity.

🩵 To every donor, partner, supporter, and person who poured into this season, mahalo nui loa. None of this happens without you. Every scholarship, fund and gift awarded represents people choosing to believe in our students and our community, invest in dreams, and create opportunities for people that would not exist with you!!

To our applicants, thank you for trusting us with your stories. Reading your applications is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do. We laughed, cried, felt inspired, and were reminded over and over again of the incredible young people and families we have here in Hawaiʻi.

All scholarship recipients have now been contacted and announced. To those who were not selected this year, please know how deeply difficult those decisions are. We truly wish we could choose everyone. Your story, your hard work, and your dreams still matter, and we hope you continue applying, pursuing your goals, and believing in yourself.

Every year we continue to grow, and with that growth comes our hope of giving more, reaching more, and helping more students and families along the way.

From the bottom of our hearts, mahalo for 10 beautiful years. We cannot wait to see where the next wave takes us 🌊✨

Congratulations to our Kōkua Keiki Scholarship recipients 🏐🌺

The Kōkua Keiki Scholarship, sponsored by HI Performance Volleyball Gym, was created to support student athletes as they continue pursuing their education and athletic journeys at any level.

This group of girls has shown so much dedication in their pursuit of volleyball and in the goals they’ve set for themselves. Some will continue playing at the collegiate level, while others are turning their focus toward education and the next chapters ahead of them. No matter what path comes next, we know each of you will do amazing things.

It has been such a privilege watching you grow, not only as teammates and athletes, but even more importantly, as young women. We have watched you learn resilience, support one another, work hard, and continue showing up through every season.

We know the impact you will make in your communities will extend far beyond the court.
No matter where life takes you next, we are always in your corner cheering you on.

This year’s Rachel’s Gift was especially meaningful to us. 🌺✨

Created in honor of Rachel Leilani Gangwes, Rachel’s Gift was designed to support and uplift children with special needs and to remind them and their families that they are deeply seen, valued, and loved.

This year, we were honored to select Rayden Geronimo, an incredible 12-year-old from Waikoloa.

Rayden’s journey has required extraordinary courage. Diagnosed with Autism at a young age, he later faced something even more unimaginable when lost his vision due to an extremely rare genetic condition. Despite uncertainty and challenge after challenge, Rayden and his family chose to meet each season with strength, learning Braille, adapting, and continuing forward together.

When we learned about Rayden’s dream and need for a Braille embosser machine, we knew we wanted to help. We had originally planned to present his gift at our scholarship ceremony, but once we knew we had enough support, we couldn’t wait another month knowing it could already be changing his daily life.

When we got to meet Rayden and his ‘Ohana we were blown away by how smart, kind, humble, thoughtful, and genuinely brilliant he is. He left a mark on all of us.

✨Rayden, thank you for shining your light into our lives. We love you and will always be in your corner. We hope Rachel’s Gift helps you continue imagining, learning, creating, and sharing all of the beautiful things already living in your mind.

You reminded us that light is so much bigger than what we see. 🌊💛 Can’t wait to be together again in June and hear all about what you have been up to 🥹

🤍 A very heartfelt mahalo to for joining our ‘ohana this year and offering to provide the remaining support needed to make this gift for Rayden possible. Your generosity helped turn a hope into reality!! We are so so grateful!

Congratulations to Alajshae, recipient of the first ever Mapuana’s Legacy Scholarship 🤍✨

This scholarship was created in honor of Janice Mapuana Javar, a dedicated educator from Nā‘ālehu whose life reflected mentorship, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving her community. It continues her legacy by supporting students who hope to carry those same values forward…

One thing that stood out in Alajshae’s application was her heart for her home community of Kaʻū and her desire to help address healthcare gaps in rural areas.

As she pursues a future as a Pediatric Ultrasound Technician, her vision reaches far beyond personal success. She shared her hope to provide “safe, compassionate, and high-quality diagnostic imaging services” for children and families in rural communities… “I aim to guarantee that young patients in rural communities get the care that they need, while also acting as an inspiration for fellow students who wish to follow health care careers”

What touched us most was the desire not only to pursue opportunity, but to bring opportunity back home 🧡 Keep on making your hometown and your island proud Alajshae! We need more people with your heart for community.

Congratulations to Lexie Uchima, recipient of the Ho‘opuakea Scholarship 🌅🌺

For this scholarship, students were asked to write a letter to someone who made a meaningful impact on their life — Lexie’s letter to her mother was a beautiful reflection on sacrifice, perseverance, and the quiet ways love can shape a person’s future.

✨“It’s not about how smart you are, it’s about how motivated you are…I look back and see everything you have up for me, your time, your money, your sleep, so I could chase my dreams without limits. You didn’t just teach me that motivation matters, you showed me what it looks like.”✨

Her words reminded us that sometimes the greatest lessons do not come from grand speeches or single moments, but from the people who consistently show up, keep going, and lead through example.

Keep that fire burning Lexie! We look forward to all the good that you will do 💛

Congratulations to Joseph Hassani — recipient of the Holomua Scholarship sponsored by ❤️

⏭️The word holomua means to move forward and Joseph’s vision reminded us that moving forward is not only about personal success, but about leaving something better for the generations that follow…

As a future educator, he hopes to teach science through a lens of conservation and stewardship, believing that even reaching a handful of students each year can create waves of impact far beyond what we can imagine.

He shared, “My greatest hope is that by teaching science from a stance of enlightenment and conservation, I can also help to secure the future of the Islands where I live, the home I love.”

❤️ Holomua Joseph! We are cheering you on as you continue planting seeds of curiosity, responsibility, and care for our world. The future of our islands grows brighter because of people like you!!!

🚀 Proud to award this scholarship for the 10th time!!! Mahalo Keaukaha General Store for a decade of generosity 🥹❤️
