have to content with various pest that try and invade their hive! Small hive beetles, usually called SHB by ! The are unable to sting the beetles due to their hard shells, so instead the chase the beetles into a corner or other tight space where they can not harm the hive. Once the beetles are corralled, the bees will build a wall with to lock them in, just like putting the beetles in jail.

This honeybee features a distinctive yellow dot on her thorax. Contrary to what one might think, she is not trying to position herself as a queen; rather, this coloration is likely a residue of pollen from the jewelweed plant. The jewelweed has developed a shrewd pollination strategy, leaving a portion of its pollen on the bee’s back, which is then transferred to the subsequent flower she visits. Upon her return to the hive, some of that pollen remains on her back, providing her with an appealing yellow accent to display among her fellow bees.

This footage is genuinely rare — watch carefully as a Varroa destructor mite lurks at the edge of a brood cell, waiting. When a bee passes close enough, it transfers directly onto the bee's body and begins climbing up toward the thorax, where it will feed on body fat and potentially transmit viruses. Varroa mites reproduce exclusively inside sealed brood cells, but they spread between adult bees in exactly this way. Seeing it happen in real time drives home why mite management is the most critical responsibility of any modern beekeeper. An untreated colony typically collapses within two years.

Varroa destructor — the most dangerous parasite facing honeybees worldwide. I spotted this mite on the back of a worker bee during a routine inspection, which means it's time to check the mite load across the whole hive. Varroa mites are roughly the size of a sesame seed relative to the bee, and they feed on fat bodies — not blood, as many people think. Left untreated, mite populations can explode inside a hive and crash the entire colony within months. As a beekeeper, monitoring for varroa and treating when counts are high is the most important thing you can do to keep your bees alive. Every inspection could catch something like this.

A royal procession of worker as they dutifully follow their into the ! The queen has followed multiple scout to the new hive, and has already moved in. The rest of be bees are following her pheromone, and other various pheromones released by other workers . Once the queen and scouts have established a location for the new hive, the rest of the bees land nearby and all quickly march in, to start setting up their new home!

Almost nothing goes to waste inside a beehive — not even dropped pollen. Watch as this worker investigates a pollen pellet that was accidentally knocked loose from another bee's corbiculae (the little pollen baskets on her back legs). She tries to pick it up, but it's a bit too awkward to grip. No worries — another bee will find it shortly and get it safely packed into a comb cell. Pollen is the colony's protein source, fed to developing larvae as bee bread. Every pellet represents real effort: a forager may visit hundreds of flowers to fill those tiny baskets.

Oh No! Intruder! In the fall, will try and break into to steal honey and other resources! As the food supply for yellow jackets decreases, they become more desperate for food and more aggressive. A large number of yellow jackets can attack and and break into weak honeybee hives, and rob them clean of honey, nectar, and even the larva. A has to keep an eye on the amount of yellowjackets in the area, and take preventative measures such as placing wasp traps in the area, or making the hive entrances smaller. A smaller hive entrance, especially in the fall, helps the honeybees defend their hive because it reduces the amount of space they have to guard!
