We’re happy to share that Smiles for Abby donated 15 care packages to Allegheny Health Network! These packages will be distributed to patients to bring a little extra support and remind them that they’re not alone in their cancer journey.

We’re so grateful to the Allegheny Health Network team for helping us get these packages to patients who could use extra smiles. 💛

Every care package is a small way to show up for young adults facing cancer, and we’re thankful to everyone who helps make this possible! ✨

Last month, Smiles for Abby was honored to be one of the nonprofits selected to receive fundraising support from the 5th Annual Memorial Bike Run in memory of John “Zipper” Maderik. ❤

Each year, John’s family comes together to raise funds in the fight against leukemia while keeping his memory and legacy alive. We are incredibly grateful to be part of an event that brings people together for such a meaningful cause.

Thank you to John’s family, the organizers, and everyone who participated. We are so grateful for your support!

❤️ CARD DRIVE FOR BAILEE ❤️

Our friends at Smiles for Abby are coming together to send some extra love and encouragement to Bailee, a 14-year-old currently battling cancer.

We’re asking our amazing community to help fill Bailee’s mailbox with uplifting cards, kind words, and lots of smiles as she goes through treatment. 💌

You don’t have to know her to make a difference. A simple card can brighten a difficult day and remind her that she has people cheering her on every step of the way.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

At Smiles for Abby, we’ve seen firsthand that breast cancer doesn’t only affect older adults. Breast cancer has been one of the most common cancers among the young adults we’ve had the privilege of supporting through our care packages. 💗

That’s why awareness matters! Know your family history, talk with your doctor about genetic testing and your individual risk, keep up with routine checkups and recommended screenings, and speak up if you notice changes in your body. Early detection matters.

To everyone facing breast cancer: you are more than your diagnosis, and you deserve support, hope, and love every step of the way.

This month, we’re honoring those who are fighting, those who have fought, and those who stand beside them.

Know your risk. Know your body. Get checked. Spread awareness. Share hope.💗

For many people battling blood cancer, a bone marrow or blood stem cell transplant can offer a chance at a cure. The transplant replaces damaged or diseased blood-forming cells with healthy stem cells, helping the body rebuild a healthy blood and immune system.

For Abby, this became part of her fight against leukemia. She received her first bone marrow transplant on her 29th birthday in December 2022, followed by a second transplant in October 2023. Because Abby did not find a perfect match through the donor registry, her two sisters who were half-matches became her donors.

Not every patient has a family member who can donate. That's why donor registries like NMDP are so important. A stranger could be the match that gives someone a chance at life.

If you're 18–35 and meet NMDP's health requirements, you can join the registry by ordering a free cheek-swab kit, swabbing your cheeks at home, and mailing it back. Your tissue type is then added to the registry so doctors can search for a potential match.

You may never be called. But you could be someone's match.

Let’s come together for Bailee. 🧡

We’re asking our community to rally around Bailee, a PA native who was recently diagnosed with cancer and is preparing to begin an intensive treatment journey.

Bailee and her family never expected to be facing this battle. Instead, they were looking forward to spending the next few months enjoying this exciting new chapter of Bailee’s life—making memories with friends, teammates, and her soccer teammates.

As she begins this difficult journey, we’d love to surround Bailee with an extra dose of love, encouragement, and positivity. We’re collecting cards to help bring a smile to her face and remind her that she has an entire community cheering her on every step of the way.

A little throwback to last month’s care package packing party!

Some of our board came together to pack 48 care packages for young adults facing cancer. Each package is a small reminder that patients are supported, cared for and never alone in their journey.

We’re so grateful for this incredible group and the time they give to help bring more smiles to patients when they need them most. 💛

Today, we’re sending a huge thank you to Kaitlin, Laura, and all of the incredible hematology oncology nurses who dedicate their lives to caring for patients facing cancer. 💙

Your compassion, knowledge, and dedication bring comfort to patients and families during some of their hardest days. We’re especially grateful for the nurses who work with Smiles for Abby and help us better understand the needs of young adults facing cancer so we can continue finding meaningful ways to support them.
