May is National Cancer Research Month โ a time to recognize how cancer research continues to change and save lives, especially for adolescents and young adults facing cancer.
Research has led to major advancements in recent years, including targeted therapies and immunotherapy treatments that are helping some young adult patients fight cancer more effectively and with fewer long-term side effects than traditional chemotherapy alone. Survival rates for many cancers common in young adults have improved because of continued research, clinical trials, and earlier detection methods.
But young adult cancer patients still face unique challenges that often go unrecognized. Cancer can interrupt college, careers, relationships, fertility planning, and financial stability during some of lifeโs most important years. Despite this, adolescents and young adults remain an underserved group in cancer research and support programs.
At Smiles for Abby, we advocate for young adults facing cancer by providing care packages, support, and awareness for the unique realities this community faces every day. This month, we also encourage our community to support organizations funding life-saving cancer research, including:
๐ American Cancer Society
๐ National Cancer Institute
๐ Blood Cancer United
Every advancement starts with research. Every breakthrough starts with support.
