NAMI Herkimer & Oneida Hosts Overwatch Peer Support Training

OPS is a 16-hour, high quality, first responder peer support certification course first developed by NAMI North Texas in 2021-2022. Once a first responder completes this training, they receive an OPS certification and are eligible to provide 1-1 support to other first responders who request assistance through OPS. First responders are also trained to recognize when peer support is not enough, thus serving as bridges to professional mental health services that specialize in treating first responders.

A total of 26 people attended the Overwatch Peer Support training on October 12th and 13th at Herkimer County Community College. The attendees represented Police, Fire, EMS, Corrections, College Public Safety, and 911 Dispatch. Agencies represented were literally from the most eastern and most western parts of our state, having Wayne County and Rensselaer County represented, in addition to Herkimer, Oneida County and Onondaga Counties.

This training would not have been possible without the assistance of Ron Petrie from NAMI Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Jessica MacDonald and the NAMI-OPS Team at NAMI-Finger Lakes. Stewarts Shoppes donated the coffee, snacks and water for both days of training. NAMI Herkimer & Oneida Counties and Fratello’s provided lunch.

The participants highly rated the training with an average score of 9.83 out of 10 that the participant would recommend the training. All the participants rated the facilitators good to excellent. We are looking forward to providing a second training in the spring.

Since 1990, thanks to NAMI’s advocacy with Congress, Mental Illness Awareness Week has been observed during the first full week of October.

Join NAMI from October 4–10 to celebrate how science, shaped by lived experiences, transforms into hope.

When NAMI was founded in 1979, seeking mental health care was deeply stigmatized, and the barriers to accessing care were steep. Today, unceasing advocacy and scientific advances have changed mental health care.

But our work is not complete. Conversations around serious mental illnesses still face stigma. Research into personal experiences with mental illness, investigating its root causes, and developing effective interventions to support those affected is still needed.
