Everyone's talking about "slow travel" this year — fewer stops, longer stays, real connection over rushed itineraries. Honestly? We've been doing that since 1977. A Friendship Force journey was never about checking off landmarks. It's a homestay, a host family's table, a slower way to see the world through someone else's eyes. Glad the rest of the travel world is catching up. 😉

This quotation from Mirjana Spoljaric, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in an interview with the New York Times. It sums up the mission of Friendship Force International.

"Let’s go back to that time when we believed in peace. Why is it so wrong to start a global movement around the notion of world peace? It’s possible. When I talk to my children, peace is not something completely away and absent for them. This is how they imagine their future. I think we have to listen to them. We have to start retreating from an overfocus on weapons, weapons systems, defense technologies. But we also have to recreate a positive narrative about humanity, about peace, about coming together and working together and living together. We have to come back to recognizing that humanity is what holds us together and is something we need to protect as a priority today, because we are debasing almost everything."

October is Global Diversity Awareness Month, and we can't think of a better excuse to say what we believe: peace doesn't only get built in negotiating rooms — it gets built around kitchen tables, on long walks with a host family, over a shared plate of food you can't quite pronounce. Today our Florida and Georgia ambassadors toured Saluda, with a very interesting visit to the historical railroad depot which stood at the top of the famous, or infamous, Saluda grade. We then proceeded on to Jeter Mountain Orchards, with their amazing dahlia garden. And then a fun finale at Boodas Brewing

We are hosting ambassadors from the Orlando and Atlanta area. Great weather for us to visit Pisgah national Forest and Brevard on the first day.

It looks like it was a fun-filled day in California for our ambassadors, who visited the Canine Companions service dog training center and the Charles Schultz museum.
