"If you plant it, they will come!"

That’s what Sharon Katz shared with us for this beautiful moment of a cedar waxwing enjoying a rainy snack in her yard. Sharon shares that this is the third year since planting an Autumn Serviceberry tree, and while she’s heard the waxwings nearby before, this is the first year they’ve felt comfortable enough to visit the tree right next to her patio!

Stories like this are exactly why we host the Habitat at Home Photo Contest — every native plant you add creates a new connection between you and the wildlife in our region.

There is still time to share your own Habitat at Home stories and photos! The deadline is this coming Monday, June 1st.

Caught in the act... and the subsequent food coma!

Paul Zimmerman captured these hilarious, candid moments of a visitor in his yard right from his kitchen window. The first shows our furry friend working hard on a bird feeder, followed by the inevitable post-snack nap. Thanks for sharing these, Paul!

We love seeing the personality of the wildlife that shares our spaces. If you've got photos of your own backyard visitors, there is still time to enter them in our 2026 Habitat at Home Photo Contest!

After Helene, neighbors on Garren Creek Road in Fairview were cut off from the outside, reeling from landslides that moved houses and took lives. The storm brought them together, doing everything they could to support each other. For many of them, they were meeting for the first time.

Natalie Lamb says there was no place in this rural community for neighbors to connect. After Helene, they knew that they needed that.

Since then, they have gained two new places to gather. One is the red barn that is home to a new nonprofit, the Garren Creek Foundation. Then, just down the road are the new trails that you helped us open in Fairview Community Forest!

“There are no other public trails in Fairview,” Natalie says. “We love it here. It’s so beautiful and pleasant, but it is also really lacking in shared spaces.”

Her fourteen-year-old daughter Nev says, “The trails add another way to not only get exercise but also see more nature... And it just adds a fun place to go instead of driving thirty minutes to experience nature.”

Due to recent storm damage and significant road closures in the area, all of our Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trails are currently closed until further notice. This includes:

- Trombatore Trail
- Bearwallow Mountain Trail
- Strawberry Gap Trail
- Wildcat Rock Trail
- Florence Nature Preserve

Major access routes, including sections of US-74 ALT, Bearwallow Mountain Road, and NC-9, are currently impacted by storm damage and ongoing repair work. Please avoid these areas for your own safety and to allow repair crews to work efficiently.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as soon as the North Carolina Department of Transportation reopens these roads and we are able to safely reopen the trails. Thank you for your patience and for helping keep our community safe.
