The meeting was called to order by the President at 6:01 pm, and the mission statement
of the organization was read.
A moment of silence was held in honor of Community Activist Crystal Cauley who
passed away on June 16th. Funeral details were yet to be finalized.
The minutes from May were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Balance last month = $17,791.37 ; $1,544.00 added (including
proceeds from Mother of the Year luncheon) ; $2,294.71 paid out (including $1,000
state assessment) ; leaving a balance of $17,791.37
Membership = 91. Reminders were sent to those whose memberships have lapsed.
Mother of the Year: A successful event. 43 in attendance. Organizers thanked the many
volunteers, participants and donors who made the event a resounding success. It was
motioned and agreed upon to give St. Paul’s Tabernacle AME Zion church a stipend for
the use of the fellowship hall.
Open Reports: Health - information was shared on Medicaid expansion.
A representative from CIRCLES shared information about this affordable housing
program which aims to build ‘circles’ of support around families in poverty. Partnering
with NACA (Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America), there were over 50
people who attended the most recent interest meeting. A free workshop will be hosted
on October 19th.
League of Women Voters (LWV) shall be hosting various meet-the-candidate forums in
the months ahead. Two dates which were shared are September 21st at Patton Park
(12 - 2 pm) and October 5th at the City Operation Building (2 - 4 pm).
President report: NAACP received a grant to help fund scholarships for students
entering the health field. Some discussion was held on what the qualifying criteria would
be. The next step is to create guidelines and an application form to facilitate the
awarding of scholarships.
Social Services will soon be hiring a new Director.
